Zzzzz … Made Me Fall Asleep. Review: The Vampire Diaries – “While You Were Sleeping”

“Katherine is such a bitch.” – Elena Gilbert

The Vampire Diaries (TVD) disappoints yet again. I don’t like the reversion to the familiar. What happened to the show I used to know and love? I feel like someone’s playing a bad joke on me but I’m still waiting for the punch line.

Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That

I don’t like this guy, nor his conniving sister.

Katherine (Nina Dobrev) can’t be gone. This has to be her final ‘F U’ to those she hates as I cannot fathom this being the real Elena (Dobrev). It just doesn’t seem right to allow Elena to remain when she’s one of the worst characters on TV. Yeah, I said it. There’s nothing exciting about her, nothing remotely interesting to keep her storyline relevant. Katherine, on the other hand, has flash and pizzazz. I’ll miss that. Dobrev can’t do the sweet, girl next door spiel without it coming across as forced. I am not impressed one bit by her portrayal of Elena during “While You Were Sleeping”. Dobrev doesn’t evoke any genuine emotion—even when Elena confronts Damon (Ian Somerhalder) in what should have been a poignant scene. “You should have noticed.” She doesn’t even deliver this line convincingly. I could do better, and that’s saying something. Dobrev overdoes every scene she’s in, boring me to tears. Even being afflicted with a vampire feeding virus doesn’t make her interesting. Why hasn’t she been offed for good yet? I’m serious. What’s the point of having Elena on the show when she can’t carry an episode? I’d rather watch Caroline (Candice Accola) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) as the vampire rescue squad than listen to Elena Dobrev fake cry. I’m not hating, I’m just not down with watching mediocre crap when I know she can do better.

Random Tidbits:

Little girl lost. I really miss Katherine.

There is yet another doppelganger. Will this story arc ever end? Will I ever care about it? Did I ever care about it from the beginning? I really thought having a doppelganger meant you had one other person out in the world who looks exactly like you. Not two or three when it becomes convenient. Do the writers think we haven’t watched every episode to know what’s happened to Stefan’s doppelganger? Or that we’d have any reason to believe there’s three of them? Guess I better go pick up my dictionary.

Does Damon resist Elena’s blood because she’s diseased? I thought the vampires who feed on vampires couldn’t fight against the virus. I guess there are double standards for everyone.

I’m happy to see Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) but he’s now a babysitter. How … boring. Again I ask, why isn’t he out being a Hunter? Has that part of his storyline been eradicated because the vampires of Mystic Falls are off limits? Here’s a thought: how about allowing Jeremy to travel, even if only within driving distance, to do some hunting. He should at least try to keep up his skills.

Bonnie’s (Kat Graham) no good to anyone if she isn’t a witch. I’m sure at some point someone will find a way to give her back her powers. Maybe she’ll be granted a reprieve during a crossover episode with The Originals. I don’t think her existing as the “anchor” to the other side is fitting.

Final Thoughts:

This chick makes me miss Nadia. I’m so over the Travelers.

The title “While You Were Sleeping” is a good fit; the Travelers are creepy; and Dobrev needs acting lessons—stat. When my seven year old daughter can bring about tears more convincingly, you know something is wrong. If there is a way to bring back Katherine, I’m all for it.
