Air Date: Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 9/8c on Fox
RATING:
“You are making a huge, life-ruining mistake by moving in with a woman who turned you into an agoraphobic, turtle-faced, borderline alcoholic.” – Jess
“See Ya” feels more like a series finale than a season finale. The ending is predictable and not all that funny. The gem of the show comes when the gang ends up in the desert and keys start flying. I didn’t see that coming.
Observations and thoughts:
The day has finally come for Nick (Jake Johnson) to move in with his long time love, Caroline (Mary Elizabeth Ellis). *snore* I expected him to panic; I even expected Nick to do something insane before finally taking the plunge. “Well, that was unexpected,” Nick says after throwing his keys into the great expanse of the nameless desert he’s driven to. So what happens to his plan? Why does he overreact and run back to the loft and his roommates? I think he’s comfortable with what he knows. I also think he’s afraid of being hurt again and not having his family of friends surrounding him when he needs them most. While I anticipated Nick would do the expected, I secretly hoped he would live a new life away from home. You know, grow up and be an adult for once.
Jess (Zooey Deschanel) confuses me. I keep thinking she’s going to admit to herself that she’s crushing on Nick, but she doesn’t do anything like that. I don’t get it. She’s flirty with him and you can clearly see she likes him, but there’s no acknowledgement of her feelings for him. And then they have a moment alone where a coyote shows up and Jess (in her infinite wisdom) decides to go Road Runner on the thing. “Meep-Meep!” It was funny, but seriously? I’m giving up any hope that these two will ever be together. The friend zone is in full effect.
Jess rings a triangle when she pees. A triangle! I just thought I’d mention that because it’s stupid.
Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece’s (Hannah Simone) relationship woes are ridiculous. I don’t understand why he’s so insecure with her. I mean, he says it himself: “You slept with me.” Doesn’t he understand she wouldn’t have if she didn’t like him? She’s been a model since he’s known her, so why does it bother him now? He’s being an idiot and I’m beginning to wonder if Schmidt deserves Cece. She’s a good woman who needs to be loved without the constant barrage of insecurity BS. I don’t even feel bad for Schmidt at this point.
Winston’s (Lamorne Morris) fear of the dark is a selling point for “See Ya.” I didn’t know he was such a baby. Morris does an excellent job portraying an adult who’s afraid of the dark, screaming at the top of his lungs when Nick yells “rahr!” Morris steals every scene he’s in. I love his reactions, his comedic timing and his enthusiasm, all of which shine through effortlessly. Winston has won me over. I have to admit, I didn’t like the change at the beginning of the season, but he’s okay with me now. I think the guys would be lost without him and his craziness.
Funny lines:
Winston: “What am I gonna do with all that extra money I have now that I don’t have to cover you anymore. Maybe I’ll buy a city.”
**
Schmidt: “When Nick leaves, I’m gonna call a plumber and just throw cash at him while he works. Fitties, and hunneds, hunneds, hunneds.”
**
Jess about the creepy dummy mouse trap: “Yeah, he’s not fooling anyone. You think just because he’s a snappy dresser the mice don’t see the hammer.”
**
Schmidt to Nick about Caroline’s cookies: “Is this a frigging carrot chip? What are you trying to buy our love with hippie chocolate. (throws cookie) Idiot!”
**
Winston: “People, just please listen to me. stop throwing your damn keys! Look, werewolves come out at night, man! I don’t want nobody to eat me. I got thick thighs. I got a fat ass.”
Nick: “Relax.”
Winston: “We are in the middle of the desert and nobody’s gonna find our bodies.”
**
Schmidt: “Now go on. You heard me. G‘won. Go on, scram! Go! I hate you!Go! Ahhhhh! Ahhhhh! Go back to your kind.”
Cece: “Are you White Fang-ing me?”
**
Winston: “Wait, wait, don’t touch me. There’s uh, there’s pee everywhere. Like, everywhere. I didn’t just pee on me. Well, I peed on me but other things peed on me too.”
**
I enjoyed “See Ya” for the most part. It would have been nice to have a season ender that left me excited for a new season, but I can’t say I feel that way after this finale. And I can’t forget the insanity of Schmidt’s kissing Nick on the mouth. (Why does he keep doing that to him?) That’s where the episode should have ended for shock value—not with the stupid dance montage.
