Air Date: Thursday, January 28, 2014, 8/7c on The CW.
RATING:
“I will hurt Klaus Mikaelson as much as he hurt me. When I am done, he will wish he could die.” – Papa Tunde
Well, the cat has been let out of the bag, so to speak. The witches are looking to regain control, put a few Originals out of their misery, and ensure no witch is ever taken advantage of again. Or should I say one witch? And here I thought the vampires were badasses. The Originals takes a journey into the past to introduce us to a new foe. Although, I’m not sure how much of a foe Papa Tunde (Owiso Odera) is.
Observations and thoughts:
New (Old) Friends
Sabine (Shannon Kane), or should I say Celeste, is nothing more than a trouble maker. And here I thought she would be the one to wreak havoc on the Originals. At this point, I’m not sure what her purpose is. Maybe she wants to remain hidden. She’s keeping her true existence a secret from her former lover, Elijah (Daniel Gillies). My romantic side is disappointed that Elijah didn’t recognize her in last week’s “Apres, Moi, le Deluge” since he loves/loved her so much. What are the writers saying with this? Has Elijah finally moved on? Is his heart open to finding love with Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin)? I still don’t know how I feel about them being together. One day I’m all for it, the next I’m against it. I don’t think Hayley can handle a man like Elijah. It will take a special woman to love a man with his intricacies. He’s been hurt and doesn’t believe in love anymore. But Hayley has something Elijah’s never had: a baby.
King (?) of the City
Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is losing his grip on the city. I’m surprised by the change of pace. It’s one of the reasons I enjoy watching The Originals. There seems to be no straight line that the show follows. While not truly a twist, things do venture down a windy path. The witches are building their arsenal against the vampires and there’s not a single thing Klaus is able to do. How does a supernatural being go against something a touch beyond supernatural? Klaus uses his brawn to get things done. He may think twice after he acts, but he doesn’t like to be seen as weak. I guess being an Original vampire will do that to you. He’s so full of himself, he doesn’t see his potential shortcomings.
Random thoughts:
Rebekah (Claire Holt) wants retribution. I didn’t realize her hatred for Klaus runs so deep and is a result of his treating her like nothing more than a silly girl. Or, maybe it’s more than that. I think this sibling rivalry will come to a head soon.
Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) is quite the mystery. Learning his love for Rebekah fuels his hidden rage is intriguing. “Something kept drawing me back.” You’d think his love for Klaus would overrule all others since Klaus is his maker. That doesn’t seem to be the case here. Rebekah must really mean something to Marcel.
Cami (Leah Pipes) is back on my radar. I don’t want to put her in the same box as Sophie (Daniella Pineda) but I can’t see what either of them do except agitate a situation. It’d be nice to see them have their own storylines again.
I don’t typically mention Diego (Eka Darville) because he’s a secondary character, but I like him. He’s a true soldier. I always wonder why Marcel and now Klaus go to him when they need something done. Is it because he doesn’t have qualms about causing trouble? Diego doesn’t seem overly strong, smart, or qualified to do anything other than take orders. I’m curious to see where his character goes. At least he’s not a cardboard cutout. He has some substance to him and Darville does a great job with his portrayal.
Memorable and funny lines:
Elijah: “I do apologize if you feel neglected. I have been occupied. My siblings are in some quarrel; Nicklaus remains agitated. You will recall even our slightest interactions infuriate him.”
Hayley: “So Klaus is a dick and you want to be a good big brother so we can’t hang out. That sum it up?”
**
Cami: “There’s nothing enviable about what Klaus does. He’s … a monster.”
Marcel: “We’re all monsters, Cami. You’re powerful like Klaus is, you just don’t have to bother hiding it.”
Cami: “Davina was powerful. She wasn’t a monster.”
**
“Dance Back From the Grave” is a solid showing. The new witches in town are causing trouble; Marcel and Klaus have fallen out with one another; and I think I miss Davina (Danielle Campbell). As an aside, I appreciate the show crossing over into The Vampire Diaries, although I’m not sure I like the outcome. Is Klaus to remain in New Orleans with no hope of ever returning to Mystic Falls for his woman? That would be upsetting.
