Where Kol Seems Unstoppable… Review: The Vampire Diaries “Catch Me If You Can”

Air Date: Thursday, January 24, 2013, 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“I’m not crazy; I’m just passionate.” – Professor Shane

The chase is on for the cure to immortality and yet another player has entered the game. Is this new seeker someone we’ve seen before or a new character to be added to the show? It’s times like these when I wish I’d read the novels so I’d have some kind of idea of where things are going, or at least, what the writers are basing the storylines on. Alas, I’ll have to wait and watch like everyone else. It’s exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. At least the Original family members are making an impact and keeping me from being bored.

Observations and thoughts:

I almost feel like the writers have turned Klaus (Joseph Morgan) into a one trick pony. He shows up, makes threats in his scariest British accent, and then strolls off into the night to do whatever it is he does. What happened to the vicious vamp who didn’t stop until he got what he wanted? Where are the swagger and dangerous vibes that scare you with one scathing look? I won’t say Klaus has gone soft, but I will say the writers have eased up on his menacing ways a bit. A few episodes back, we saw that Klaus when he went a-slaying his hybrids. Can he come back now? Rebekah (Claire Holt) makes me quake in my boots more than he does in “Catch Me If You Can.”

It would have been amazing if Damon’s love was the answer to breaking compulsion. Yeah, right.

I’m not sure anyone can overcome compulsion by simply relying on the love they have for their significant other. Not even the infallible Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). I know Elena (Nina Dobrev) thinks he would “do anything” for her, but she can’t honestly expect him to magically undo wicked Original juju because he wuvs her so much. Love is a powerful force, but it isn’t that damn powerful. While his inability to break through Kol’s (Nathaniel Buzolic) compulsion doesn’t say anything against Damon’s love for his precious Elena, it proves the Originals have more going for them than the average vamp.

Stefan (Paul Wesley) is quite the character. I’m not sure if he’s experiencing growth or simply undergoing a rewrite. Long gone is the depressed, given-up-on-life Stefan from a few episodes ago. He still has drive and is determined to acquire the cure for Elena (even if he doesn’t want to touch her with a ten-foot pole) but he’s changed. He’s hurt, yet can you blame him? The love of his life has turned away from him and gone straight to his brother. “You don’t know what I look like when I’m not in love with you.” What a verbal bitch slap! It’s about time Stefan proves he can live without Elena. I was beginning to think she was his lifeline and he would go all Emo on us again.  Kudos to Wesley for perfecting his I-don’t-give-a-damn glare while delivering a dynamic performance.

The professor has lost his damn mind and Bonnie is headed for trouble. Here’s to her dad putting a stop to the madness!

When did things get to the point where daggers  and boxes are the way to go instead of settling arguments like normal siblings? “We dagger one another when we have disagreements,” Kol says to Rebekah. I wonder what their family dinners are like. And speaking of the rest of the Original family, when will the other brothers come to visit? This whole search for the cure is getting out of hand and I predict Elijah (Daniel Gillies) will make an appearance soon.

I like the way Elena thinks. She’s never been my favorite character (ever) but I like her taking control and sticking up for Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). After all, they are all each other has anymore and there’s something to be said for the bond between siblings.

Memorable and funny lines:

Damon to Elena, about his weird behavior: “It was Kol. He must have compelled me. If I find Jeremy, I’m gonna kill him.”

**

Stefan to Rebekah, after a would-be thief offs himself: “There’s another team in the race.”

**

Professor Shane (David Alpay) in his sexy, evil voice: “With my guidance, she can be one of the most powerful witches in the world. But without, woo; she’s a time bomb.”

**

And Stefan puts Elena in her place, yet again:

Elena: “Stefan, what are you doing with Rebekah? She tried to kill me.”

Stefan: “And this would be the second time Damon’s tried to kill Jeremy. Nobody’s perfect.”

**

It’s time to see what the younger Gilbert is made of.

Here are a few things to think about until the next episode: Is Jeremy up to the great hunter challenge? Can he take out Kol and handle the consequences? Will the Salvatore brothers step in to aid Jeremy in this suicide mission?  I don’t think Jeremy’s ready yet but it should be interesting to see how he handles himself against the Original bad boy.
