Where John Takes a Bullet. Review: The Tomorrow People – “Sitting Ducks”

“I’m so stupid, how did I miss it?” – Stephen

I want to say I still love The Tomorrow People. I thought it would be a groundbreaking show after viewing the pilot episode. Now, I feel like the show is on a downward spiral. It’s still cool and high-tech but the drama angle is off. I don’t feel like fighting the good fight with the team anymore. I’m sure it’s just me and not really what’s going on in “Sitting Ducks” because the episode doesn’t suck … much. Some of the action sequences though, can’t say the same for them.

Observations:

John (Luke Mitchell) is quite the interesting character. While “Sitting Ducks” isn’t a true foray into his past, there’s more than meets the eye with him. We almost get to see what makes John tick; why he rallies so hard against Ultra. Sometimes I doubt his true intentions when it comes to going up against Ultra because he has such a deep emotional tie to Jedikiah (Mark Pellegrino). It begs the question, how far will John go to right his wrongs?

Well, this is awkward.

The main characters take a backseat this week as Astrid (Madeleine Mantock) finally has her shot in the limelight. Because she’s on Ultra’s radar, she gets a bit more screen time. We don’t learn anything new about her except she can sing. Nice! It’s too bad Astrid remains nothing more than collateral damage, though. Truth be told, it’s partially her own fault. Remember all the snooping she did? I’m a little pissed that she’s upset at Stephen (Robbie Amell) when she’s the one who wanted to know the truth about what he can do. I think now I understand why Jedikiah is so hell bent on keeping humans and The Tomorrow People (TP) separate. Overall, the writers give us a peek into the lives of the paranormal/normal friends and how their differences affect one another.

Random Thoughts:

Hillary (guest star Alexa Vega) has a serious issue with Stephen. She thinks Jedikiah is playing favorites with his nephew since, well … he is. I definitely don’t like this girl. She might be good for Stephen though. She’ll keep him on his toes. She’s as strong as Cara (Peyton List) but with more attitude. I don’t like how she’s coming across as a bitch because I don’t think she is. She’s another scared little girl trying to survive in a world of instability. I hope she gets to stick around for a while.

I know I haven’t been in a subway station for a few years now but I haven’t forgotten how far under ground they are. You can’t use cell phones down there, Astrid. Writers, you may want to work on how believable you want The Tomorrow People to be.

Russell (Aaron Yoo) is out of commission but hasn’t lost his sense of humor. I’d like to see him up and about soon. There’s something missing when Russell isn’t able to get into trouble. Yoo doesn’t excel as a high strung guy sequestered to the couch.

Minor Tidbits:

*Spoiler alert* — If Luca (Jacob Kogan) is anything like Stephen, what a duo they will be. Oh yeah, exciting things are coming.

I don’t ever want to see Astrid with a gun in her hand again. That was, by far, the worst bit of acting I think I’ve ever witnessed.

Funny line:

“You can check our browsing histories? Not that I’ve looked at anything on the internet that I’m ashamed of. The windows … they just pop open.” — Russell to TIM (and no one) about his internet usage.

Too bad Stephen isn’t the camping type.

Yeah, I’m not really buying into “Sitting Ducks.” It’s nothing more than a filler episode with a little action, suspense, and telepathic powers to appease fans. I guess I’m expecting more at this point. The plot should be moving forward. We’ve been given hints about the higher-ups pulling Jedikiah’s strings but the writers haven’t really gotten into the mystery behind these men. There has to be more to the story.
