Air Date: Thursday, October 10, 2013 8/7c on The CW
RATING:
“I’m the leverage. I’m that thing that everybody wants.” – Katherine Pierce
The Vampire Diaries (TVD) is bringing it this season. I don’t have many complaints as I’m not bored or wishing I was watching something else during the show. Last season really left a sour taste in my mouth. I’m pleased this isn’t the case so far. But you know how it is; I always speak too soon and end up disappointed. I’m going to go out on a limb and say I don’t think that will be the case with season five. TVD is back with a vengeance and it’s in the form of a mind controlling doppelganger. What fun!
Observations and thoughts:
Well, since killing off one teacher, it seems he’s been replaced with another of the same skill set. Dr. Maxfield (Rick Cosnett) knows about vampires? And doesn’t hesitate to call you out in class? Nice! (He’s no Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis), but still.) Is it bad of me to say I enjoyed how thoroughly mortified Caroline (Candice Accola) and Elena (Dobrev) were when he called them out in class? Talk about embarrassing. You’d think two secure vampire vixens wouldn’t know the meaning of the word embarrassed. How about the two actually use their vampire abilities to get ahead in the world? I get it; they want to go the normal route and do things like humans, but they aren’t human! There has to be some benefit to being a vampire they can use while in college. They’re showing their dumb.
You know, just because Katherine (Dobrev) is human, doesn’t mean she’s not still manipulative. She’s quite the actress too. I wouldn’t be offended if the Silas switcheroo were done with Katherine and Elena.
Matt (Zach Roerig) is in deeper than he knows. Remember back when he had that small stint of seeing ghosts, and now he’s been hexed or something and is walking around on the other side. For craps sake! I’m not the biggest Matt fan because he’s been used as a tool for so long but I’m hoping his character finally gets some growth. He should be developed into something more than the helpful human friend.
“If I told you exactly what I did, then that would ruin all of the fun.” Exactly, Stefan/Silas (Paul Wesley). This is my point about Silas being outed already. Why not leave everyone in Mystic Falls in the dark for a while. It’d be understandable that Bonnie (Kat Graham) would find out and dish to Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) because that’s expected. But we’re only two episodes in and everyone but Dumb and Dumber (Caroline and Elena, in case you didn’t get that) realize who Silas is.
I like Jesse (Kendrick Sampson). I like him a lot. He’s not easily swaying my desire to see a relationship develop between Caroline and Klaus (Joseph Morgan), but he’s growing on me. He’s sweet, attentive, and totally into Caroline. She’s one lucky girl. But she’s Klaus’ girl, so back off buddy! Yeah, I know, Caroline hearts Tyler (Michael Trevino). Doesn’t mean I have to like it though.
“Slower than a vampire and weaker than a vampire. But I am a Hunter. And I work out.” Damn straight, Jeremy! Can you say “Get ‘em boy!” I love this side of Jeremy. He’s no longer the weakest link. Have you noticed he’s Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) go to guy? Not just because Damon is keeping an eye out on Jeremy but because he knows the younger Gilbert can get the job done. I’m impressed with McQueen’s ability to slip into the role of a Hunter and make us believe he’s never been a mere mortal. Jeremy doesn’t have anything else in his life anymore. He’s not in school (not cool, writers!), doesn’t have friends his age; he’s focused on doing a job and doing it well. I only hope we continue to see more of him in a positive light and watch him develop into a formidable man.
Memorable and Funny lines:
Damon to Elena: “You do realize you are dating a reformed serial killer, right?”
**
Katherine to Jeremy: “Maybe I can get out of the car because I need to pee, in the bathroom, like a lady?”
**
Caroline, clutching her towel to her body: “Damon, towel, knock!”
Damon: “Caroline, no one cares, no!”
**
Silas: “Look, I get why you like her. I mean, I have a soft spot for brunettes too. What I don’t get is why she likes you.”
Damon: “It’s ‘cause you haven’t had sex with me.”
**
Katherine to Jeremy about survival: “How do you think I survived for 500 years? It wasn’t because I was a vampire; it’s because I never looked back. Don’t be dumb. Don’t look back.”
**
The episode title “True Lies” has to refer to the lies being told by Bonnie and Silas. What truth can be found in what they want people to believe? Bonnie has been lying to herself and her friends; Silas has been lying to everyone with his appearance and mind control. I won’t psychoanalyze this; I’ll just enjoy the season and see where it goes.
