Season 4, Episode 22
Air Date: Thursday, May 9, 2013, 8/7c on The CW
RATING:
“It’s time to drop the veil.” – Bonnie Bennett
A mysterious storm, freak power outage, and a witch on a mission. Finally! We’re getting some action. I’ve been waiting for the veil to drop and the lovely little town of Mystic Falls to be flooded with deceased supernaturals for weeks now. Because what else could be more awesome than all hell breaking loose and everyone running around panicking? Nothing, that’s what. Well, maybe Elena (Nina Dobrev) finally meeting her end, but I know that’s not gonna happen. I thank you, writers of The Vampire Diaries (TVD), for the small favors you give us. Now how about hooking up Caroline (Candice Accola) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) already!
Observations and thoughts:
Someone finally brings the witchiest witch down to earth again. I love Bonnie (Kat Graham), I really do but this season her head’s gotten big. I’m glad to see Silas (Scott Parks) knocks her down a few pegs. I want Bonnie to be the best she can be but without guidance, she’s going out of her gourd. “Expression is the manifestation of your will.” Well, where was Grams (Jasmine Guy) when Bonnie needed that information before. Or did she need to spill that secret?
I’m so tired of seeing Elena cry. It’s torture. Not because I feel sorry for her but because Dobrev cries exactly the same way each and every damn time—without shedding a tear. So yeah, I’m convinced she’s really feeling the scene. Not.
I am happy to see the return of quite a few missed faces like Alaric (Matt Davis), Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic), Lexi (Arielle Kebbel), and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). As an aside, how the hell does Alaric know about Silas? Wasn’t he killed before all that drama happened? I actually scream upon seeing Jeremy and Lexi on my screen. I still can’t believe they’re gone. But where were all the other wandering souls like Vicki (Kayla Ewell), Anna (Malese Jow), and Jenna (Sara Canning)? Hello! I would have loved to see them more than anything (and this isn’t the first time I’ve asked about Jenna coming back). It’s always interesting to see who gets to revisit the living and what they bring to an episode. I think Jeremy’s return is a big deal for Elena and hopefully she’ll finally get some closure and can move on in her grief. And yeah, Lexi makes Stefan (Paul Wesley) smile because you know he misses her like crazy. But doesn’t Matt (Zach Roerig) deserve a little good news too? He hasn’t been seeing dead people as of late (wonder why that tidbit’s been lost in the sauce) and there’s no one else in the world he cares about more than his family. I wish he could have had a family reunion too.
“Elena’s only goal is to end Katherine’s life and that’s not just going to magically disappear with Pilates and a juice cleanse.” Leave it to Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to be the logical (and witty) Salvatore brother when it comes to Elena. Stefan remains clouded by his unending love for Elena giving her the benefit of the doubt no matter the circumstance. Stefan thinks he can save Elena. I think he needs to save her because he probably feels it’ll bring her back to him. Good luck with that one, Stefan. Ain’t gonna happen, dude.
Memorable/Funny lines:
Katherine (Dobrev) to Bonnie: “That old Lockwood cellar reeks of wet dog.”
**
Elena: “I don’t care about Bonnie. I care about killing Katherine.”
**
Matt to Rebekah (Claire Holt) about why he won’t let her heal his wounds: “People in this town have a bad habit of turning into vampires, and I’d like to graduate high school as a human.”
**
Silas to Bonnie: “I can make you see whatever I want you to see. Am I a disfigured monster? Of course not, that’s what I wanted you to see. That’s the beauty of this. You have no idea who I am. Or what I look like. Or how deep I am inside your head.”
(Now this is a villain I can get behind. He’s scary as hell.)
**
Damon after watching Alaric take a drink: “I thought you were cutting back?”
Alaric: “I thought you were gonna take care of the children?”
**
I enjoyed the twist thrown in at the end of “The Walking Dead.” I wasn’t expecting to see The Five nor did I think about what that would mean for all of the vampires in Mystic Falls. I guessed what would happen to Bonnie and I’m not broken up about it. She kind of spoke her demise into existence by telling Elena they had plenty of time to catch up. So now that the resident witch is on the other side(or is she?), who’s going to close the veil? Or do anything else that Bonnie did to ward off the evil vampires in town? Consistency aside, “The Walking Dead” isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’m somewhat looking forward to the season finale if for no other reason than to see how much terror The Five will bring about to the vampires in town.
Tune in to The Vampire Diaries season finale next Thursday at 8/7c on The CW.
