San Diego Comic-Con 2015

Grimm Press Room

Saturday, July 11, 2015

One of the highlights for me at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was covering the Grimm press room. I’ve covered the press room since the second season and it’s still one of my favorite rooms at SDCC. This year was made even more special because of Reggie Lee, but I’ll get into more of that later.

A booming voice bursts into the room – Russell Hornsby was super pumped and makes his presence known. Every person sitting at the round tables turns around and looks in Hornsby’s direction. Now that’s how you start a press room!

Almost all the cast were present. Absent, of course, is Bitsie Tulloch who plays Juliette Siverton. If you remember, Juliette took an arrow to the heart at the end of season four, courtesy of Trubel, played by Jacqueline Toboni (also not in attendance). The only one I didn’t get a chance to talk to during this year’s roundtables was Claire Coffee, who plays Adalind Schade. She made some rounds but was also nursing her newborn. It was so adorable seeing her as a real mom and not just one on Grimm.

First up was Silas Weir Mitchell who plays Monroe, a Wesen creature known as a Blutbad. He’s always so great to talk to and very straightforward with his answers. He mentions that season five is going to be a “reboot” of Grimm, so to speak.

Next was Bree Turner. Her character, Rosalee, is married to Monroe. Rosalee is also Wesen but she’s a Fuchsbau. Turner mentions this season her character’s past will rear its head. If you recall, Rosalee had problems with addiction and spent some time in jail.

I then got to speak with Sasha Roiz, who plays Captain Sean Renard. He talked about playing the Ripper character in season four. He also disclosed that when they do interviews like this, the cast aren’t being “secretive;” they really don’t know much until they get the script one or two weeks prior to shooting. Roiz also says Renard might be a tad relieved that Juliette isn’t around to spill the beans to Nick about their little affair. This segment of the interview gets quite hilarious with Roiz’s commentary about his character Renard and Nick sharing two women.

Best. Hug. EVER! Reggie Lee rocks!

Now, it’s Wu time! Yes, Reggie Lee who plays the lovable Sgt. Wu came by the table and let us know he’s ready for his character to have a ‘Wu-mance.’ Will Wu find love in season five? Lee the mentioned he wouldn’t mind a Wesen love interestfor his character. He mentioned a Fuchsbau but definitely doesn’t want anything to do with the Aswang Wesen due to a traumatic experience in season three. Lee then talked about the Ripper story arc from season four and revealed the back of a police car is not comfy at all.

I’ve said it many times in my reviews, I love the Wu, and Lee actually recognized my name from Twitter. When I asked if I could get a photo with him after he was finished making his rounds, he insisted we take the picture right then and there. Far be it from me to say no. Best. Hug. EVER! Gotta love the Wu! And shout out Team Sgt Wu on Twitter!!

I also got to chat some with Norberto Barba, Executive Producer / Director, Jim Kouf, Executive Producer / Writer, and David Greenwalt, Executive Producer / Writer. They weren’t as forthcoming with information but I did get some tidbits about the mysterious keys we’ve seen since season one. There are supposedly seven keys and each key is a stamp that creates a map. The EPs assured us we will learn more about these keys and maybe see some other artifacts in season five as well.

Next up, I spoke with David Giuntoli. Giuntoli talks a bit about the turmoil his character Nick Burkhardt will be facing in season five. As you recall, in the last two episodes of season four, Nick lost his mother and his girlfriend. Giuntoli revealed Adalind will give birth in the first episode and it will be interesting to see what this Grimm/Hexenbiest child will be like. He also touched on some of Nick’s Grimm powers stating, “The trouble with powers is that sometimes, it can break a show.” Giuntoli would like to see Nick use more hand-to-hand combat instead of tapping into any special abilities or powers.

And last, but certainly not least, a vivacious Russell Hornsby brings his vivacious energy to the table. Hornsby lets us know the way he approaches his character, Hank Griffin, is with more of a “physical presence” than “audible presence.” Hornsby also touches on his possession episode, “Mishipeshu,” (episode 418) and how much fun it was to play; it allowed him to tap into his theatrical training.
