Round table interviews with Containment
The buzz around Containment is good; really good. After watching the first two episodes prior to attending the press room, I was excited and anxious to speak with the cast and executive producer Julie Plec about the show’s premise (based on a Belgian television series titled Cordon) and how the adaptation would translate for American audiences. (The limited series event Containment premieres Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 9/8c on The CW)
Throughout the roundtable style interviews, I spoke with (in order): Kristen Gutoskie who plays Katie Frank, executive producers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, George Young who plays Dr. Victor Cannerts of the CDC, Claudia Black who plays Dr. Sabine Lommers, Hanna Mangan Lawrence who plays Teresa Keaton; Christina Moses who plays Jana Mayfield, Trevor St. John who plays Leo Greene, and finally executive producer/writer Julie Plec.
To give a few highlights of the interviews, executive producers Chris Ord and Matt Corman provided great insight into the making of Containment – consulting with medical professionals and the CDC to ensure authenticity as much as possible. The make-up department needs to be commended for their stellar work. There are “five stages” of the illness from contracting the virus to death. The transformations are tremendous and frighteningly realistic.
I truly enjoyed speaking with Julie Plec. I asked her what was it about Containment that drew her in, she said, “The fact that it wasn’t supernatural but still had a clear monster…” And the monster is a scary deadly virus. I commented on how fluid and organic the character development happens and how well written the series is to which Plec explains, “Well, I tell you, you can thank the Belgian series for that…I lifted a lot of what they did.” Don’t you just love an honest answer? Another journalist asked Plec who is her favorite character to write for. Plec answers, “Leo because he’s so unpredictable.” I also really enjoyed when Plec talks about her history in working with Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson. She discussed how she used her background in horror to help navigate her writing and developing suspense. “The monster is under your bed, in this show, all the time…” I love Plec’s description of what every episode of Containment needed, “the three H’s – heart, horror, and holy shit.”
There is so much more revealed in the video interviews, so please check out the full video below with plenty of juicy tidbits for what’s coming up in Containment.
