Event: Red Carpet Premiere of FX Network’s TABOO
Date: Monday, January 9, 2017

In case you haven’t heard of the new drama series from FX Networks, here’s a brief synopsis:

Set in 1814, Taboo follows “James Keziah Delaney,” a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father’s shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father’s legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery.

Taboo is created by Steven Knight with Tom Hardy and Chips Hardy, who is also the show’s consulting producer. Executive producers are Ridley Scott and Kate Crowe for Scott Free, Tom Hardy and Dean Baker for Hardy Son & Baker, and Steven Knight, with Timothy Bricknell producing. Taboo is directed by Kristoffer Nyholm (Eps. 1-4) and Anders Engström (Eps. 5-8), and reunites Hardy and Knight for their third collaboration following Locke and Peaky Blinders.

In attending the red carpet event, I was able to interview several cast members including David Hayman who plays Brace, Franke Potente who plays Helga, Michael Kelly who plays Dumbarton, and Oona Chaplin who plays Zilpha.

Taboo is brilliantly dark and decidedly taboo, for lack of better words. Mystery, supernatural, political intrigue, family secrets, and a forbidden relationship are all intertwined in a twisted and ominous tale.

I also got to speak to co-creator/writer Steven Knight and director Kristoffer Nyholm who directs episodes 1-4.

All the interviews were informative, especially David Hayman who mentions “where the bodies are buried.” And I completely enjoyed talking with Franka Potente. I loved her character Marie from Bourne Identity and Bourne Supremacy. Oona Chaplin is a hoot! My camera didn’t pick up the first part of the conversation where she says the name of our site from the placard on the floor, but she tells a publicist to “get her a corner.” She’s such a breath of fresh air and her enthusiastic energy is delightfully infectious!
