Two Jacobs. Recap: Resurrection - “Two Rivers”

Bellamy (Omar Epps)

With the mystery surrounding young Jacob’s (Landon Gimenez) return to Arcadia, his grave is exhumed by Maggie (Devin Kelley) and Agent Bellamy (Omar Epps). They are baffled to discover Jacob’s remains clothed in the same shirt he woke up wearing in China.

Later, Bellamy confronts Caleb (Sam Hazeldine) about his past and vows to leave no stone unturned in order to find out what Caleb seems to be hiding. At times, it feels like his questions are a little too much, given his job as a customs agent; I wonder just how much jurisdiction he really has.

After experiencing some pain in his wrist, Henry (Kurtwood Smith) visits Maggie to ask for some pain medication. During the exam, he asks Maggie what was found when she and Bellamy opened Jacob’s casket. She tells him they found his remains. Smith gives an outstanding performance in “Two Rivers” conveying the emotional struggles his character is going through dealing with Jacob’s return.

Bellamy shows up just as Henry is leaving to ask Maggie about Caleb’s death and where he was found. When she tells Bellamy about Caleb’s hunting shack along the river, he asks if she will show it to him.

Ray (Travis Young) continues to doubt that Caleb is his father, which leads to some tension between Ray and his sister Elaine (Samaire Armstrong). What is it that Ray sees that Elaine doesn’t and will Ray be able to convince her before something bad happens?

At the church, concerns grow over Jacob’s return and some parishioners express their fears to Pastor Tom (Mark Hildreth). He tells them he is willing to trust that God will show them the way but one person ominously asks, “Are you sure He’s the one behind this?” It’s becoming obvious some people are beginning to question these strange occurrences, and aren’t willing to go on just faith.

Sheriff Fred Langston (Matt Craven) shows up at his brother’s house looking for Henry only to discover he isn’t there. Jacob asks if he wants to play cops and robbers like they used to. While playing, Fred asks about the mystery man Jacob saw with his aunt, Fred’s wife, right before she died. When asked if the man pushed her in, Jacob tells Fred he tried to save her. Later, Fred goes to a bar wearing civilian clothes and orders a drink. He tells the bartender his wife was cheating on him before she died. He goes on to say he wished the guy she was cheating with had killed her so he could go after him. He says the only thing preventing him from going down that path is his daughter but adds, “Then again, if that bastard ever shows his face to me…” He pauses, takes a sip of his drink and leaves. The camera pulls back and reveals the mystery man sitting at the end of the bar, and he suddenly looks panicked. Did Fred know the man was there and was just sending him a strong message?

On the way to Caleb’s hunting shack, Maggie points out the spot where Jacob and her mother died to Bellamy. Maggie realizes half of Caleb’s ashes had been spread in the river and questions if something in the water could be the key. It seems like a far-fetched idea but you never know. Hopefully, one day we will start getting some answers rather than more questions.

Henry finally returns home and is confronted by his wife Lucille (Frances Fisher) about his standoffish way towards Jacob since his return. Henry tells her their son was found in the tomb, meaning there is now two of them. He asks, “Now what am I supposed to do with that?” Lucille is so happy to have Jacob back, she just can’t understand what Henry is feeling. But, she can’t keep her head buried in the proverbial sand much longer, can she?

Back at the church, unbeknownst to Tom, the board has a secret meeting. Tom confronts the board and they inform him they want Jacob and Lucille banned until things can be figured out. I really like Tom, not only because of his childhood relationship with Jacob, but because it raises some moral questions. It’s fascinating to watch Tom struggle with his beliefs and what he is seeing. After all, how many times has Tom preached to the congregation about miracles and resurrection; yet, when a miracle in the form of resurrection seemingly happens, everyone questions the possibility.

Jacob and Henry finally have some bonding time in Henry’s workshop, where Jacob notices the wooden boat they made together before he died. It’s a touching father and son moment for the two but just as things seem to be working out between them, Henry suddenly experiences the sharp pain in his wrist again, causing him to accidentally cut himself badly. The sudden pain causes Henry to lash out at Jacob saying, “You don’t belong here.” What an awful thing to say to such a confused little boy!

Bellamy and Maggie make it to Caleb’s shack and discover several large holes dug all around the cabin. While checking out the holes, Bellamy realizes someone is watching them. He and Maggie chase the person through the woods and realize it’s Ray. Back at the house, Ray explains to Bellamy and Maggie he believes his father is an alien. They think that is absolutely crazy and yet, is it any crazier than Maggie taking a sample of the water thinking it might be magical?

After getting stitces, Henry sits down with Lucille to talk about Jacob. In one of the more powerful moments of “Two Rivers,” Henry explains that to him, Jacob never really went away because he still sees him in his dreams, and hears him when he hears the sound of children. To accept the new Jacob, he feels he will lose the Jacob who has comforted him in his dreams all these years. He explains he can’t let that Jacob go and doesn’t understand how Lucille can. An understandably upset Lucille exclaims, “How dare you,” and then walks away.

While looking into Caleb’s former associates, Bellamy goes to a house where he notices a trail of blood in the hallway. Following the trail, Bellamy discovers a body. But, whose body is it?

At the same time, Tom notices the church has been broken into. He too follows a trail of blood, only to discover a woman sitting in the dark in one of the pews. He asks her if he can help her and she tells him she had no place to go until she saw his name on the sign outside. As she turns to him, he gasps, “Rachael?” As “Two Rivers” ends, young Rachel (Kathleen Munroe) asks, “Did I really die, Tom?”

With the third Arcadia member to return in the first three episodes, there are still more questions than answers. How long the audience is willing to watch without getting some real explanation remains to be seen.
