Review: Grimm, S2, Fall/Mid-Season Finale, Ep. 212 – “Season of the Hexenbiest”

“Oh! There is a terrible witch in that house who spewed her poison over me and scratched me with her long fingernails.” —Grimm

Another quote from a scary fairy tale that would have been better suited to the season one finale, “Woman in Black.” The terrible witch, or in this case, a Hexenbiest, is the darkly troubled Adalind (Claire Coffee), who has returned to Portland seeking the mysterious “key” Nick’s (David Giuntoli) aunt gave him before she died.

Adalind thinks being behind bars in Sean’s precinct will keep her safe while she doles out orders, but I think her confidence will soon be rocked.

I expected so much more for a mid-season finale. Watching the previews for what’s to come in 2013 only frustrates me even more. Why couldn’t this fall finale have had more of a cliffhanger, such as Cpt. Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz) bursting through Juliette’s (Bitsie Tulloch) door on a stormy night in rapture? Isn’t he supposed to be madly obsessed with her? By the looks of how they were kissing in the spice shop before Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) recognized the beguiled Juliette, I was sure Sean would try to see her again. Instead, we’ll have to wait for 2013 to see that juicy tidbit. FML. And enough with the cryptic French phone calls. We get it. You speak French; it’s hot; you’re hot; take off your shirt again…Please (giggle)! I love Roiz. He does a great job of portraying a man torn between what he knows is right and what he can’t control—in this instance, his inability to resolve his obsession with Juliette on his own. If he can’t find a cure of sorts, I’m not sure what will happen with these two. But I’m so ready to find out.

Adalind is quite the…witch. And the other word that rhymes with it too. Coffee does a great job of utilizing sarcasm along with a crass attitude, soaking them both into this character, but I’m not buying it. It’s like she’s trying too hard to be the jaded woman seeking vengeance, although it comes off as ingenuous.

Monroe – unleash the beast within! I know you want to.

Monroe is such a great friend. Not only does Juliette find solace in him after her falling out with Nick, but he also takes Nick in after he leaves Juliette’s house. I have to admit though, when Nick goes into Juliette’s room telling her he’s “not sleeping on the couch anymore,” I thought these two would finally reconcile but that doesn’t happen. As an aside, this is another aspect of the show I really do enjoy—the attention to detail. From the stained glass window on Monroe’s front door, to all the old-world coo-coo clocks and ornate wooden furniture in his spare room, these are the details that give the show just a hint more realism of old meets new.

Nick underestimated Adalind’s tenacity. I think a lesson is about to be learned the only way it can be…the hard way.

The main theme of “Season of the Hexenbiest” is the “key” and Adalind’s job to retrieve it by any means necessary. She’s already gotten Hank (Russell Hornsby) temporarily out of the way, in a rather painful manner, and now she’s got Sean doing her leg work for her. The whole Adalind storyline is rather boring. She’s sitting pretty in jail waiting for things to happen because she labors under the false pretense of being in control. But all she’s really doing is working for the royals in Vienna. She has no more powers because Nick took those away from her, so other than her looks and push-up bra, what kind of threat could she possibly pose? Can a Hexenbiest regain their witchiness? Now that would be an interesting plot twist. Monroe says it best when he tells Nick, “I think the time for being careful is over, Nick.”

I guess I have no choice but to wait until 2013 to find out how the remainder of this season will go. I will just have to hope my wish list for Grimm-Klaus will get fulfilled:

Dear Grimm-Klaus,

I want Monroe to go full Blutbad on some nasty evil Wesens, which he should have done in this episode but didn’t. I also want Nick to snap out of his revere and become the Grimm he’s supposed to be. Note to Nick: Stop being so nice and stop pining over Juliette. Some nasty Wesen want you dead. Focus.

And yes Grimm-Klaus, I want a shirtless Roiz. Can you blame me?

P.S. I may be on the naughty list but I did do some nice things this year. (wink).
