Review: Warehouse 13, S4, Ep. 406 – “Fractures”

“Fractures” has some great moments, but overall, it missed the mark. While I understand the team has to have a case of yet another artifact gone missing, this time from the “dark vault,” I feel the writers could have done a much better job of coming up with a different story behind Lewis Carroll’s mirror. I mean, Carroll did write “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” but to have the trapped spirit of Alice Liddell (Stephanie Barrett) “body jumping” by using a shard of the broken mirror seemed a bit disjointed.
Alice has body jumped into Vanesssa (guest star Lindsay Wagner) and takes Artie (Saul Rubinek) hostage.
Once again, Myka (Joanne Kelly) and Pete (Eddie McClintock) are sent to solve the mystery of the missing artifact while Jinks (Aaron Ashmore) volunteers Claudia (Allison Scagliotti) and himself to stay behind at the warehouse. We know the reason behind Jinks wanting to stay out of the field—to protect Claudia, but he’s only making matters worse by not telling her about their connection with the metronome. He does eventually reveal the secret, but only because there wasn’t much choice after Alice body jumps into Vanessa (guest star Lindsay Wagner) and holds Artie (Saul Rubinek) hostage. As an aside, how cute is it seeing Artie fawn over Vanessa? It’s nice to see him happy, at least for a few hours.
The interesting part of this episode is Leena (Genelle Williams). I’d really like to see her character become more involved in the day to day. She’s mysterious, and I want to know more about her back story. How does she know so much about the artifacts? When Claudia climbs up a ridiculously rickety-looking mountain of crates to fetch a spirit-catching hookah pipe, she accidentally knocks down a spear that unwittingly transfers her aura with Jinks’; something that doesn’t escape Leena’s sharp eyes: “I know what I saw and I’ve only ever seen that once before and it didn’t end well.”

Jinks tells Claudia, Myka, and Pete about the other missing artifacts and the strange black crystals left in their stead. Myka is right to be concerned about Artie keeping secrets but she can’t begin to understand the toll it’s taking on poor Artie. How is the Brotherhood infiltrating the warehouse and getting inside, of all places, the “dark vault?” And now that we know Artie’s hiding place for the astrolabe, is it safe? And why was Leena in there while Artie was making sure the astrolabe was safe? Why didn’t she let him know she was in there, cataloging? I don’t think she’s in cahoots with the Brotherhood, but I know she has a close connection with Mrs. Frederic (CCH Pounder), and I wonder if she’s going to reveal this new development.
While I think the writers missed an opportunity with Lewis Carroll’s mirror, there are other aspects of “Fractures” that pushes the series forward. Jinks and Claudia already share a connection with the metronome and now there is something going on with their auras. Could that be related to the metronome? Artie abruptly ends his relationship with the lovely Vanessa after the incident with Alice but Vanessa isn’t a fool. She knows Artie is hiding something: “I don’t know what is going with you but when you finally wake up and realize that cutting yourself off from the people who love you is a truly terribly idea, call me. I am not going anywhere.”
I’m kind of bummed we have to wait two weeks for a new episode due to the Labor Day holiday. But I’m anxious to see what other dark artifacts will come up missing, and how much longer Artie is going to be able to keep up the ever crumbling façade around his secret.
