Air Date: Sunday, April 29, 2012 10/9c on HBO
RATING:
The Veep finally gets what she wants—her fifteen minutes in the West Wing—and it makes me excited for her. Only things don’t exactly go the way she wants and she ends up having a “yoghurt” mishap. The time clock in the corner of the screen is a familiar, yet useful way of letting us know how long it takes for Gary (Tony Hale) and Selina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) to get sick after being sneezed on. Yum. After watching “Frozen Yoghurt” I no longer miss working in an office environment.
Observations and thoughts:
I take it Selina will ask Sue (Sufe Bradshaw) if the president has called every day. Not sure if that’ll still be funny if it’s repeated every episode. I got it the first time.
I love seeing Selina using hand sanitizer. (I’ve got bottles of the stuff all over the place!) I hadn’t thought about the number of hands she shakes and the germs she may come in contact with. So of course, when she gets sick with Eric’s (Dan Franko) “gastric bug,” then goes out for yoghurt, you know things won’t turn out well for her. And yes, I laughed my ass off. Her situation kind of reminds me of that scene in Bridesmaids where the girls get food poisoning. Yeah, it’s that bad.
Why on earth would Amy (Anna Chlumsky) leave Selina alone in an important filibuster? Amy is her right hand and it seems she might be Selina’s compass—she’s always pointing Selina in the right direction. “No I didn’t have it covered and it’s your job to know that if I say I have it covered I don’t have it covered and you cover me.” Right, Selina. Amy’s a mind reader now? I guess her Chief of Staff is supposed to be psychic as well as a babysitter. I wonder how that works.
Mike’s (Matt Walsh) sweaty shirt stains make me wonder how hot it is in the VP’s office. “I’ve got very large pores.” I can’t help noticing the numerous spots all over his shirt that seem to be in unusual places. Who sweats just below their shoulders, anyway?
I don’t see Selina as president. She’s a mess as the VP without having that much responsibility as it is. Not to say she can’t do it—I just doubt her ability to avoid throwing a chink into the chain and screwing things up royally. It would be funny to watch as it happens though.
Dan Egan (Reid Scott) always steals Amy’s thunder. The two are like siblings arguing over who mommy loves best. He’s slowly working his way to being as close to Selina as he can. Amy knows his game and is doing her best to keep him at arm’s length, but he’s slick. I like him being around because he shakes things up. I’ll be honest, Scott is a scene stealer. He leaves a lasting impression after delivering a witty line or an all-knowing facial expression.
Funny lines:
Eric to Amy: “I swear to God they put your office on top of hell.”
**
Selina: “I could move more air by farting.”
**
Gary: “Every single thing you say to me is emasculating. Do you realize that?”
Dan: “Yeah.”
**
Mike: “Uh, Dan, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but can I just say… you kind of look like an asshole.”
**
Jonah (Timothy C. Simons): “I work at the White House so I can just walk in and say, ‘I’m from the White House, what the fuck are you doing?’”
Mike: “What?! You work at the White House? Oh my God, can I blow you?”
**
Gary: “I’m gonna have a blow-out if I walk to the pharmacy. That’s what I’m afraid of.”
Amy: “If you’re going to shit your pants, I don’t want you here.”
**
Selina: “I was charmed by Doyle. He’s got that little twinkle in his eye, he’s talking about fisting people… he just niced me. I got niced.”
**
Selina: “You know if I wash my hands anymore the bones are going to come through.”
**
“Frozen Yoghurt” is another outstanding showing from Veep. Not only is it funny, it showcases all of the actors’ talent and the camaraderie of the cast. Gary gets the short end of the stick, which will probably be his shtick, and Selina is her usual shining self. I fall more in love with the show with each viewing and I think this one will stick around for quite a while.
