“I won’t miss.” – Sasha Williams
The Walking Dead (TWD) prepares us for its final two episodes of the season with a touching display of the usual heroics. “The Other Side” isn’t explosive or compelling but it is honest. There is no hidden meaning here. We see clearly what the writers want us to know―someone is going to die. Whether it is the man we know everyone is gunning for or one of our beloved survivors remains to be seen.
You Can Stay
Why do we see so many characters offer themselves up for the supposed greater good? Not to say there have been a number of people on TWD who do that but as a general observation, no one is that good. This is what comes to mind when I see Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) making her goodbyes to people who don’t realize she’s planning to leave, never to return. Why doesn’t she give herself a fighting chance or believe she can do what she’s setting out to do? I don’t see Sasha going down without a fight. It can’t be her time yet. We’ve already lost so many others, countless others who didn’t have the chance to grow. I’m holding out for hope that Sasha will come back to us like she said she would.
Sasha and Rosita (Christian Serratos) have a few heart-to-hearts while walking to the Sanctuary. I’m sensing a lot of tension between these two and it isn’t pretty. Rosita comes across as a whiny child during their journey. The two women couldn’t be more different but their differences make them amazing in their own right. But if you notice, Sasha is dressed for war while Rosita looks like she’s going out for a leisurely stroll. It is clear who will be doing what and why. I’m not sure why Rosita believes she is right to harbor so much anger against Sasha but her rage is misplaced. “I thought I hated you,” Rosita finally admits after miles of bickering. Going after Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is the name of the game, yet Rosita almost wants to one up Sasha in the race to get to him first. Maybe Rosita feels if she kills Negan she’ll have avenged Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) because she loves him the most. On the other hand, she might have a death wish. I wonder if this is what Sasha considers before choosing to go into the Sanctuary alone.
Since when does a crate full of aspirin equal “medical solutions” to anyone? I about laughed my butt off during this scene. While it pisses Gregory (Xander Berkeley) off, it makes me dislike him even more for the slithering, sneaky snake he is. He all but rats Maggie (Lauren Cohan) out to Simon (Steven Ogg) without naming names. Gregory is the biggest coward there is, only looking out for himself. He could try to be a better man and give a crap about the people within the walls of the Hilltop but that would be too much like right.
Interesting Quotes:
Jesus to Sasha: “Rosita didn’t come here to train. You’re both going after Negan. You can’t do that without people—a lot of people.”
Don’t say Jesus (Tom Payne) isn’t a genius. Hello, Captain Obvious.
**
Sasha: “The thing is, Rosita is going with or without me so it should be with me.”
Right here is where Sasha stakes her claim. She won’t be denied her shot at getting her revenge, or is it peace? Jesus won’t stop her but will he end up backing them up in the end?
**
Sasha to Rosita on why she’s so gung-ho to go into the Sanctuary: “What the hell’s wrong with you? They take us, we don’t get another try because they’ll kill us. We’re out here we get another go.”
Then they pull out their blades and slay some walkers. You know, another day in zombie apocalypse.
**
Maggie: “Daryl…”
Daryl: “I’m sorry. *cries* I’m sorry. “
Maggie: “It wasn’t your fault.”
Daryl: “It was.”
Maggie: “No. it wasn’t. “
Damn, Daryl (Norman Reedus) cries, I cry, and I’m sure everyone watching this scene sheds some tears too. It’s a conversation that needs to be had and I’m happy to see Daryl get the closure he’s craving. But yeah, it was kind of his fault. No need to be nice, Maggie. *sorry, not sorry*
**
Sasha to Rosita: “No matter how it all goes down, I got your back.”

Overall
While not entirely predictable, “The Other Side” doesn’t shock me. Sasha has come across as a martyr ever since her brother died. She has the power to be more but continues to allow her emotions to guide her instead of using her brain. Part of me thinks Sasha knew if she didn’t volunteer herself for what might be a suicide mission, Rosita would surely die. “Go. It’s not your time. They need you.” My thought is Sasha wants to keep something Abraham loved in the world, even though he’s no longer in it. It can only get better from here on out, right?
