Air Date: Thursday, April 18, 2014 at 8/7c on The CW
RATING:
“Well, would you look at that; I think we just met the universe.” – Enzo
The Vampire Diaries (TVD) takes us on what could be a nauseating trip down memory lane. In case you don’t remember the what’s and how’s of the eventful relationship that sparked the TVD craze, here’s your refresher. “I need you to tell me that I’m not crazy.” I agree, Stefan (Paul Wesley), because I feel a little off my rocker after watching “Resident Evil.” I don’t like watching flashbacks of things I’ve seen before ad nauseum but “Resident Evil” leaves me with a pleasant taste in my mouth. I may want more of this new turn in events.
What’s With All The Alien Eyes?
Travelers rule and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Talk about a foe who can’t be beaten. Markos (guest star Raffi Barsoumian) is finally revealed and I have to say, I’m digging this dude. The story arc is intriguing but I’m almost certain that with too much of the Travelers and their mumbo-jumbo, I’ll become bored. Considering the series title has the word ‘vampire’ in it, I’d like to see more about that particular supernatural being. The focus has shifted a bit, leaving the vampires on the backburner. It’s almost like the vamps don’t play as important a part in events as they used to. But what would Mystic Falls be without some evil entering town and shaking things up?
That aspect is part of the reason I like the addition of one particular character—Enzo (Michael Malarkey). He is all about being a vampire. While bloodlust doesn’t rule his world, he isn’t above the usual malarkey the living dead include in their repertoire. “We could just murder people.” Would it be so bad for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to take Enzo up on his offer of debauchery? There are baddies in town that need slaying. Besides, Damon and Enzo make one hell of a team. Dare I say it, I like watching those two interact more than I do the Salvatore brothers. Damon and Stefan don’t seem to have the same bond as the one between Damon and Enzo. Oh, and I guess that pesky little love thing might have something to do with Damon clicking with his friend over his sibling. If Enzo were in love with the woman who is the center of Damon’s heart, I don’t think they’d have the same relationship.
The promise of true love sends Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan on a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. I almost got sucked into their “visions” but knew better than to fall for that modicum of happiness. Watching the two experience lives they never in a million years makes thought they could have you wonder what’s in store for the remaining doppelgangers. Will they eventually make their way back to one another or will they find themselves drifting father apart? Does anyone want to see Stefan and Elena reunite? “It was a spell, showing us what we wanted to see.” Such a telling statement; of course, it comes from Stefan. I would love to see Elena come to an intelligent conclusion on her own for once. It’s dangerous to dwell in the what-ifs, Elena.
Is it me or has Enzo taken all of the witty lines from Damon? He’s quick, hilarious, and always on point when making an observation. Or is it that Damon got his penchant for cutting quips from Enzo. I think further investigation is due.
Funny and Memorable Lines:
Enzo reveals his motivation behind finding his long lost love: “Seventy years of captivity and visions of her face were all that kept me alive. I don’t want to date her, Caroline; I just want to thank her.”
**
Enzo to Caroline, making light of the visions plaguing Stefan and Elena: “Break out the popcorn, blondie; Elena’s little sex romp isn’t over yet.”
**
Damon to Markos while on a walk that leads to info dumping: “I’m sorry, are we walking so I don’t fall asleep?”
**
Final Thoughts:
I enjoyed “Resident Evil” because of the witty dialogue, convincing special effects, and character development. Kudos to Wesley on his directorial debut. Not a bad job, if I do say so myself. I’m interested in the new bad guy in town—how his presence will affect the people of Mystic Falls, and whether he’ll get his hands on that elusive doppelganger blood. Join me next week, won’t you?
