The Test. Retrospective: Lost Girl - "Fae-ge Against the Machine" 1

Tamsin and Bo pair up to find a Squonk

The real test of The Dawning is upon us. Bo (Anna Silk) begins showing signs of weariness so Stella (Deborah Odell), her trainer, gives her a break, which Bo certainly takes advantage of. But unbeknownst to Bo, training is over and the real test has already started. The cricket test proves useful in “Fae-ge Against the Machine.”

I may not love Lauren (Zoie Palmer) to bits but I admire her skills as a scientist and the fact she’s a nerd. She made me giggle when she freaks out to Bo about unexpectedly winning a science research award, telling her a cute but lame joke: “Why do chemists like nitrates? Because they’re cheaper than day rates.” Like Bo, I didn’t get the joke right away, either, but Palmer’s delivery was spot on. Now that The Dawning is happening, will Bo have time for Lauren? I really don’t see any place for her, what with Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten) asserting herself as sort of a protector to Bo, and the ever-present BFF Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) permanently glued to Bo’s side.

Tamsin takes on a surprising role in “Fae-ge Against the Machine.” She sort of appears out of nowhere to warn Bo about how tough The Dawning is, and then accompanies Bo on a quest to find a young girl named Hannah (Allie MacDonald) who’s being held hostage by The Wanderer (Brian Frank). Making a deal with Balzac, a Spriggan (a rather sprightly Ryan Belleville) isn’t to be brushed away, and even though Tamsin has no real reason to investigate, she decides to help Bo. Why? That’s a good question but since we’re halfway through this season, I’d like to think she cares about Bo and wants her to successfully pass the rigorous challenges ahead. This is also the first time we see Tamsin out of her cop uniform and in sexy clothes, with her hair braided back, as if she’s supposed to be seen as a friend, and not as an antagonist. Besides the fact Dyson is nowhere to be seen, it feels like a natural evolution. I almost didn’t miss Kenzi until the end of the episode, and I always feel a void when she’s not around.

Trick has to make some tough choices

Something special happens in “Fae-ge Against the Machine”: Trick (Rick Howland) finds romance with Stella. I loved seeing their interaction, especially when The Dawning begins and Stella coaches him on how to make the right choices for Bo. They work so well together; I really hope Stella sticks around because she brings out a warmth in Trick. And, you know, older people need love, too, just like the young’uns. I like that she’s firm and not overly sentimental.

You know, I was totally not expecting a kiss between Bo and Tamsin to happen. The fact it’s spontaneous and they’re both surprised by it will probably spur some sort of triangle involving Lauren. I don’t know if Tamsin is bisexual (or pansexual) but it doesn’t even matter because it’s Bo. Who doesn’t want to be with Bo? A Bo and Tamsin relationship would be combustible, and I’m completely on board if a romance develops between the two. One thing I really like about Tamsin is the expressiveness of her eyes. When Bo tells her, “I was wrong about you. You’re one of the good ones,” Tamsin’s eyes widen in surprise and she looks away, obviously embarrassed by Bo’s comment. And then she beats a hasty, awkward exit. Yep, something is definitely brewing here!

Oh, and that cricket test? This is how Bo manages to kill The Wanderer. She passes the first phase of The Dawning, thanks to Trick. Not bad for a Blood King but there is more in store for Bo yet!
