“We need to nail Darius.” – Dr. Alison Lennon
This week on The Lottery, unbeknownst to President Westwood (Yul Vazquez), he continues to be threatened; Darius (Martin Donovan) confronts his daddy issues; and the wild goose chase to find hard evidence that the US government caused the fertility crisis hits a dead end. Can’t the writers focus on the crux of the lottery or the six children left in the world? What happened to them? Have the kids fallen prey to the same horrible fate as poor Elvis (Jesse Filkow), or do they no longer matter? These story arcs are going off on such a wide tangent I can’t remember what the series is supposed to be about.
Moment #3 – Papa Don’t Preach. First Lady Gabrielle (Shelley Conn) and her desire to have one of the miracle babies isn’t quite the shock it should be. She can’t be the only powerful woman in the world thinking this way. (I also never thought she’d come right out and ask either.) Will she get away with her plan? Are the writers pointing out a fatal flaw in the lottery by showcasing the emotional impact it has on a woman who is so close to the game but not able to be a player? What if Gabrielle were able to participate in the lottery? Would it be fair since she’s the president’s wife? Or would her presence make the other contestants step up their game? Gabrielle has an agenda and she won’t be deterred. But that is not the sole focus of “Truth Be Told.”
Moment #2 – Not Just a Pretty Face. Perry Sommers (Karissa Lee Staples) is the quintessential ‘can’t catch a break’ contestant, except she seems to be on a winning streak. The First Lady is putting her full support behind Perry because she believes in her. Right … ‘cause we all know Perry is the mothering type. She’s smart, without a doubt, but she doesn’t want to be a mother. You can see it in everything she does. Heck, Gabrielle even calls her on it. But I have a sneaking suspicion Perry will make the final cut—even if the First Lady ends up slipping other contestants “sedatives.”
Moment #1 – Daddy’s Home. Did you see the look on Vanessa’s (Athena Karkanis) face when she sees Darius is the person waiting for her? I like Vanessa, I do, but she doesn’t stand a chance against Darius. He’s plotting to kill the freaking president! What makes her think she won’t bite it just as quickly? Vanessa isn’t power tripping but she considers her position in the White House can’t be overturned. Vanessa isn’t as powerful as she likes to think she is. If Darius wants to do something, she can’t stop him. I am more concerned for Vanessa’s safety than anyone’s. Darius already has it out for her. What makes her think she’s safe from his wrath?
Random Tidbits
Angela Maria Perez (Christiana Leucas) is boring. She will not be missed. I can’t help wondering how far into the game she would have gone before caving and spilling her guts to the nation. For someone to come across as picture perfect, you know they have to be hiding something. Now we know what skeletons Angela had in her closet. And just when her story was finally getting interesting.
James (David Alpay) does something stupid enough to get himself put out of the game. You know who’s next on the list.
Kyle (Michael Graziadei) might be putting himself on the chopping block for what he feels is right. He has no idea who he’s allying himself with. This extremist group has access to Elvis and that puts me on guard. How does Kyle know they won’t turn on him and use Elvis against him? He should listen to Alison (Marley Shelton) because she’s seen firsthand how crazy things get when someone wants an embryo. Oh, and how about Alison and Kyle starting a relationship? I’m still reeling over the idea of Alison and James being an item in another life. My mind is blown.
What does Darius’s daughter Rose (Megan Park) have to do with anything? We see her every now and again, yet she’s nothing but a distraction for her father. When will we find out what she knows? Or will she end up a casualty of war too?
Overall
I find myself losing my fervor for The Lottery. We are thrown a few bones here and there, but it’s not enough to keep my attention. The lottery is rigged; I’d rather view Darius’s home life; and Kyle hasn’t gotten his chance to go commando yet in the rescue attempt for his son. That’s what I’m waiting for. That’s what I want to see. But that is not what we are getting. What do you think about this week’s episode of The Lottery?
