(February 16, 2021) – Schlemiel Pictures announced today that BuzzFeed Studios has boarded as executive producers onto its latest film, THE END OF US, the directorial and screenwriting feature film debuts of Henry Loevner and Steven Kanter. The independently produced pandemic-era comedy was inspired and created by former BuzzFeed  producers and  actors during  last year’s California lockdown and adhered to strict COVID-19 safety guidelines during its production. THE END OF US is set to make its world premiere in competition at next month’s 2021 SXSW Film Festival.

“BuzzFeed is known for content featuring smart, socially relevant themes, and THE END OF US speaks to the experiences we endured over the past year through a sharply funny and wryly observant lens. We are excited about our new partnership with the filmmakers, and look forward to our debut at SXSW and finding a partner who will leverage our massive global network in reaching a broad audience for our film,” said Richard Alan Reid, Head of BuzzFeed Studios.

The news follows BuzzFeed and Lionsgate’s theatrical and PVOD release of feature thriller “Fear of Rain.” BuzzFeed also recently announced the production of two other feature films: “1UP” starring Ruby Rose and Paris Berelc, and “Book of Love” starring Sam Claflin and Veronica Echegui.

In THE END OF US, it’s the night of March 10, 2020 and out-of-work actor Nick (Ben Coleman) and his type-A girlfriend Leah (Ali Vingiano) are breaking up. However, the split is poorly timed. The following morning, California issues its stay-at-home order for COVID-19 and the exes must continue living together. As the quarantine drags on, Leah begins a secret courtship with her charming coworker Tim (Derrick DeBlasis), while Nick realizes he’s made a terrible mistake and decides to use the lockdown as an opportunity to win Leah back.

Starring Ben Coleman, Ali Vingiano (writer, “The Morning Show”), Derrick DeBlasis (“Tom Explores Los Angeles”), Gadiel Del Orbe, and Kate Peterman, THE END OF US is produced by Claudia Restrepo (writer, “Your Daily Horoscope”), Henry Loevner, Steven  Kanter, and Lovell  Holder (“Working Man”); and executive produced by Robert Williams and BuzzFeed’s Richard Alan Reid.

Schlemiel Pictures is the production company of THE END OF US director/writer/producers Henry Loevner and Steven Kanter.  The independently produced feature film marks the first-of-its-kind collaboration among BuzzFeed alumni who include the company’s former producers Loevner, Kanter, and Restrepo. Actors Coleman and Vingiano also appeared as an on-screen couple in dozens of BuzzFeed YouTube sketches, Del Orbe starred alongside Restrepo in BuzzFeed’s “Pero Like,” and Peterman is the voice of Boggo in BuzzFeed’s “The Land of Boggs.”

Said THE END OF US filmmakers Loevner, Kanter, and Restrepo, “When the world was entering lockdown in 2020, we were inspired by Ben’s story of his break up with his long-term girlfriend in the middle of a global pandemic. As we set out to make an authentic, lighthearted illustration of how young people were dealing with life in quarantine, we decided to make this film with the most talented people we know, who happened to be all our former colleagues at BuzzFeed.

Having BuzzFeed Studios as our partners going into SXSW is a gratifying, full circle moment for us, and we look forward to celebrating the world premiere of THE END OF US together. Socially distanced, of course.”
