Air Date: Thursday, November 12, 2013, 9/8c on The CW.
RATING:
“Let’s end this, shall we?” – Klaus
The Originals touches on the family dynamic in “Bloodletting.” The ties that bind run as thick as the blood coursing through the veins of the Original vampires and one unborn hybrid baby. Who knows what lies in store for vampires and the shifting of power in the supernatural world? The potential for greatness lies in the womb of a wayward werewolf. Stay tuned, folks because a new powerhouse is in town.
Observations and thoughts:
Loving the soundtrack for “Bloodletting.” It’s sexy, dark, and fits the mood of The Originals to a tee. A good soundtrack works wonders. The CW doesn’t overlook the little things. Music is the universal language and its notes can pull emotion from a person with the slightest pitch in sound. The opening scene leaves an impression as The Neighborhood’s “Let it Go” plays; you know something is going to go down between the grownups. And who knows, maybe the song is trying to tell us something.
Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) keeps things tucked nicely up his sleeve. He never shows his cards and I find that interesting. Here Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is the older of the two, the more experienced, yet he acts like a novice when it comes to being underhanded. I’m totally on Klaus’ side when it comes to this war with the NOLA vamps. With that said, I don’t expect Marcel to just turn tail and hand over everything he’s worked for without a second thought. I quite enjoy the banter between these two and watching the feelings they’re so desperate to hide slip through their masks. So, who are you rooting for?
Elijah (Daniel Gillies) hides no pretense with his commanding presence. I don’t think he could put the fear he does into vampires without his reputation backing him up. But he can be a bit of a disappointment when it comes to supporting his younger brother. I get the older sibling syndrome as I’m an older sibling myself, but I don’t take someone else’s word over my brothers’. Elijah loses a few points from me in “Bloodletting.” I only hope he can win them back; redeem himself for his family’s sake. He is, after all, family-centric. Don’t let a woman come between you and your brother, Elijah.
Does anyone else get chills when watching Gillies and Morgan on screen together? The two go head to head like siblings out to prove something to one another. It’s quite fascinating to watch. Gillies exudes regality while Morgan perfects the role of misunderstood bad boy. Thank you, writers, for showing us what a true sibling rivalry should look like. “Bastard. That’s all I am to you, isn’t it?” I feel for Klaus. He’s always the hated one; always the villain. He’s clearly in search of love. He yearns for someone to accept him for who he is. Doesn’t seem like he’ll ever find that with his family. His flesh and blood only see him as a nuisance.
“They can’t help you. They’re in the woods, hiding, because they’ve been persecuted for decades by vampires.” Well, it seems Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) has found her missing, long lost family. Boo-hoo. I’d like to say this story arc was more interesting, but it isn’t.
I have to say I’m surprised by the revelation of Marcel and Rebekah (Claire Holt) rekindling their forbidden love affair. I could sense the sexual tension between the two but never thought anything would come of it. So now that it has, Rebekah will likely be blinded by her love for Marcel and play into his hands. The writers once again take this poor young girl, who yearns for true love, and put her through the ringer. You know it won’t be easy for her to relinquish loves hold on her this time around.
Random thoughts:
If Tyler (Michael Trevino) is a hybrid, why doesn’t he use his keen sense of smell to sniff out Hayley? You can’t tell me he has no idea how to use his super senses. And for that matter, who is this guy? He’s always been an alpha-douche, but Tyler steps it up a notch in “Bloodletting.” It’ll be interesting to see how long Klaus can hold off on his promise to “allow” Tyler to live. (I just got chills typing that.)
Learning why Klaus and Hayley’s baby is dangerous to the world makes me giddy. Can you imagine what Klaus would do (or not do) once he learns what power he’ll hold in his hand? I like the twist, I like the drama involved, and I especially love what this means for the town of New Orleans.
Memorable and funny lines:
Elijah: “Not the most attractive community, are they?”
Klaus: “You do realize they can hear you?”
Elijah: “You do realize I don’t care?”
**
Marcel: “You know, Elijah, I liked you better in that box.”
**
Klaus: “You seem quite determined to find the little wolf.”
Elijah: “I’m moving too fast for you, Nicklaus, you’re welcome to wait in the car. Do be certain to leave the windows down.”
**
Tyler to Hayley, questioning Klaus’ motives: “Klaus Mikaelson, killer of men, women and puppies all of a sudden wants to be a daddy?”
**
“Bloodletting” is yet another solid episode and proves The Originals is making its way in the vampire drama TV slot. There’s so much to take in and process from the episode, especially knowing the family rift between the Mikaelsons has once again been renewed. And with Tyler Lockwood in town, things can only get more interesting. Be sure you don’t miss an episode. Drop me a line in the comments below if you wanna chat, or hit me up on Twitter @ellemoe.
