I attended the red carpet premiere of My Blind Brother where I spoke to Jenny Slate, Zoe Kazan, and Charlie Hewson about their new movie.
My Blind Brother revolves around Robbie (Adam Scott), a blind, narcissistic athlete, and his brother Bill (Nick Kroll), who feels obligated to serve as his brother’s guide. Things get complicated when they meet Rose (Slate), who eventually dates Robbie despite being attracted to Bill. While a woman coming between two brothers is nothing new, Robbie’s blindness, not to mention his narcissism, make for an interesting twist.
This isn’t the first time Sophie Goodhart has been involved with My Blind Brother; she directed the short film of the same name in 2003. Now, it’s a feature film written and directed by Goodhart who, based on the short clip after the interviews and credits, appears to be having a blast on the red carpet. With My Blind Brother, Goodhart successfully walks a fine line in finding the humor in situations a blind person faces without appearing to mock the visually impaired.
The cast is wonderful and Slate steals every scene she’s in. She doesn’t get enough credit for the physical comedy she brings to her roles. Rounding out the cast is Kazan who plays Francie, Rose’s close friend, while Hewson plays GT, the local drug dealer.
My Blind Brother is an entertaining film that’s worth checking out when it’s finally released. In the meantime, check out my interview with Slate and Kazan, along with a message from Hewson to fans of the now defunct White Collar, where he appeared several times.
