“Why the hell does anybody still live here?” – Lexie
Losing no time, “The New Girl” picks up immediately where “Lost and Found” left off — a stand-off with the Guard, and good old Jordan (Kate Kelton) leading the charge against Nathan (Lucas Bryant), Duke (Eric Balfour), Jennifer (Emma Lahana), and the proverbial new girl on the scene, Lexie (Emily Rose).
Not Killing Anyone
Lexie isn’t going to shoot Nathan despite Jordan’s persistent nagging. Rose does a phenomenal job of embodying this new persona. She’s completely different from the Audrey (Emily Rose) we’ve come to know and love but there is something about Lexie that feels familiar. Just as Lexie’s ability to wield a weapon can put any federal agent to shame, she also possesses other innate qualities that come in handy. Who couldn’t use a class on how to pick a lock?
A New Plan
Duke figures out a way to buy some time and keep the Guard at bay. Supposedly “the troubles” won’t end until Audrey/Lexie kills the one she loves the most, Duke proposes Nathan do his damndest to make Lexie fall in love with him. Sounds simple enough but the hitch in the plan is Nathan is so blinded, he can’t see past his own disappointment when it’s Lexie, not Audrey, who falls out of the barn.
Speaking of plans, it seems Dwight (Adam Copeland) and Vince (John Dunsworth) have been working on something of their own in case the ‘Audrey coming out of the barn/Nathan sacrifice’ plan goes to hell in hand basket. But Jordan mentions something I didn’t really want to fathom. Duke’s family curse is killing troubled people and when they kill, the person’s troubles end—as in forever. The troubled person’s family won’t be afflicted anymore. What if Duke kills Lexie/Audrey? She’s immune to the troubles but Jordan thinks the troubles are Lexie/Audrey’s trouble. Sounds a bit farfetched and besides, no one is going to kill her off. If anything, the way Jordan continues to behave, she’s going to take a walk off a short pier into a raging pit of fire. Just saying. To her credit, Kelton does an amazing job of playing a very unlikeable character. Too good maybe.
The Trouble of the Week
Tyler (Jon McLaren) has a strange and unfortunate trouble. He can possess others but in turn, his body becomes severely damaged. After a terrible car crash leaves Tyler paralyzed, he kills his girlfriend Katie (Charlotte Hegle) and his best friend Josh (Douglas Nyback) because they’re sneaking around behind his back. But now that his body is failing, he decides to possess a new body – Duke. Well, he picked a good one, I’ll give him that.
In a race to figure out how to get Tyler to stop his possession, it’s Lexie who steps in. As Jennifer reminds us, if Audrey were immune to the troubles, then Lexie is also immune. But what happens in the basement of the hospital is quite intriguing, and leads to a super shocking surprise ending I didn’t see coming. I should have, there were clues. I won’t give it away but when you watch, think about all the things Lexie does. For someone who dislikes everything Audrey likes with fervor, it reminds me of the quote from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, “The lady doth protest too much methinks.” I will leave it at that. And how odd is it that it’s Duke, not Nathan, who figures it all out? Balfour mentioned in a conference call that he and Audrey have a special connection. Could he be the one she loves most? What will that do to his burgeoning relationship with Jennifer? That kiss, even though he was possessed, happened, and Jennifer kissed him back!
Interesting lines
Lexie to Jennifer when she brings some of Audrey’s clothes: “Fifty shades of beige.”
***
Lexie to Nathan: “Does the rest of the world know about this town?”
***
Lexie and Nathan talk about what he and Audrey had:
Lexie: “You had something, you and her?”
Nathan: “We had…something.”
Lexie: “Did you and Audrey knock boots? Did you make sweet love?”
Nathan: “It’s, uh, complicated.”
Lexie: “Complicated is what all the married guys tell me when they want to sleep with me. But I’m guessing with you, though, it really is complicated.”
***
With the shocking revelation at the end of “The New Girl,” how will the charade Duke planned come to fruition? What will happen when the Guard finds out? And why is Jordan hanging around waiting for Duke’s brother Wade (Christian Camargo)? When the possessed Duke punches him, Wade’s blood doesn’t make Duke go all silver-eyed. Does this mean Wade isn’t troubled, or are they immune to each other’s blood because of their familial curse? Where are those blasted Darkside Seekers? I thought strangers were coming to Haven.
