With a large following, Supernatural was one of the most anticipated press rooms for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. And they didn’t disappoint, especially when they came out of the gate with some major revelations, the most important one being a major surprise that will be revealed during the season nine premiere that will carry on throughout the entire season. Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Mark Sheppard and executive producers Robert Singer and Jeremy Craver tell us about it.
There is a BIG Secret?
I heard directly from Singer — who happened to be attending his very first Comic Con ever – that history is in the making! He revealed, “There’s a real surprise in the first episode that no one is going to see coming and there’s going to be a few gasps.”
That sure sounded intriguing, and to my relief he elaborated a bit more. “This year’s first three episodes, are setting up our world, are all really special. I think the fans are really going to dig what we’re doing. We start and put up a lot of balls in the air that will take us through 23 [episodes]. I’m really happy with the first three. They’re pretty much mythological.”
By setting up our world, Singer referred to the fallout from last season’s finale during which the Winchester brothers chose each other, Crowley (Sheppard) didn’t get cured, something continued to be wrong with Sam (Padalecki) and last but not least, the impressive visuals of angels falling out of the sky Ackles went on to add more details about his character: “There is a situation that is happening that Dean is aware of and he has to keep quiet about. It’s a very substantial secret. “I’m excited to see how that is going to play out. That’s what I’m excited about so I guess that would make me excited for other people to see too. It’s the secret that Dean is harboring.”
That sure sounded like a big deal and when I talked to Padalecki, he was dying to disclose what the secret was all about. However, there was an issue. “Since Jeremy and Bob didn’t talk about it at the panel, I can’t talk about it,” Jared explained, referring to the previously held Supernatural panel.
Nooooo! My brain was running in all sorts of directions and then I noticed how frenzied Padalecki was getting; it was killing him not to be able to disclose more. He even confronted Craver on their way out of the panel and asked, “Dude, why didn’t you talk about it?!” I love it when an actor is that engaged with his show’s plot; it’s a great sign we can expect interesting storylines. Padalecki added, “He’s the head boss man but yes, it will be obvious because it happens in the first episode and it carries on forever.”
Undeterred, Padalecki did spill some golden details: “It’s the cause of another secret and a rift between the brothers but that hasn’t happened yet because Sam doesn’t know about this secret. But Sam obviously did not get better when he stopped the trials…Sam didn’t get better.”
That sounded both intriguing, concerning, and all around exciting because the relationship between Sam and Dean has always been at the heart of the show. While I processed all these details, Padalecki continued on in an amusing and charming display of frustration for not being able to share the details of the secret. Next, he yelled out to Craver: “Jeremy, I want so badly to talk about this thing and I…AGGHH…I flew all this way!”
Craver just chuckled but didn’t green-light Padalecki, who wrapped up the interview by making it a point to share some extra precious details about the secret: “It’s going to be in every episode but it happens in the first and we’re shooting in the second. It’s continuous but Sam doesn’t know and he’s heavily involved. I’m really so sorry, I want so badly…It’s so cool. It’s made me more excited about shooting this season than any other season in the show and this guy [Carver] won’t let me talk about it.”
I was most appreciative of his attempts to share the scoop but he left me so curious. Luckily for me, it wasn’t long before I was able to talk to Carver, who shared his perspective on this storyline. “You want to break news and give teasers. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I believe people should experience the show the way it’s meant to be experienced. Even as I talk about the season this year, I’m leaving a few big things out. I am and it’s on purpose; it’s going to be worth the wait and that is as far as I can go as far as in terms of…but look, it makes me very excited that he’s [Padalecki] excited about it.”
I made a last ditch attempt to squeeze out some detail no matter how small. I inquired if he could reveal who the secret involves and here’s what I got: “It involves the boys.”
That wasn’t much but hey, at least I tried.
Which Characters Will Return for Season 9?
When I tried to find out which actors might reprise their roles, Ackles provided some perspective concerning how decisions are made about returning guest actors.
“One of the great things about our show is that the writers and producers pay attention to feedback. They know when things stick and when things don’t stick. I think it’s very intelligent of them to utilize the ones [characters] that work. “I think the writers understand that there are characters that are fan favorites, and I think it would benefit all of us to have them back.”
He also provided additional insight in how Padalecki and he love characters who they can establish a relationship with and why. “It’s really difficult to establish a relationship with just one episode. So, the more characters that we get to create storylines and relationships with, I think the richer the show becomes.”
I agree with him, and then Ackles specifically mentioned one character he hoped to see back. “I hope they bring Benny (Ty Olson) back. Benny has been one of my favorite characters since day one. I loved what tied him to the character; I loved the way he was written; I loved the bond that he and Dean had. I think that was really richly layered in a way that we haven’t seen for some time.”
Lastly, he brought up Bobby (Jim Beaver). “I don’t know what is the deal but it’s Supernatural; we can make it happen.”
Coincidentally, a few minutes later, Singer confirmed Beaver is coming back and his return appears to involve a slight twist. “You’ll see him in a way that he hasn’t been seen before. We have some ideas but I don’t want to spoil anything. But having said that, fans of the show — no one they really like or they really hate is gone forever.”
He’s got that right! Although Craver didn’t reveal the secret earlier, he did a great job of providing a full update on all the returning characters. Here is his season nine round-up:
- “We’re going to see Bobby and I can’t say too much about it. We’re going to see him in a way that we don’t expect, but in a way that is also true to our show’s mythology and our lore in that we’re not suspending the laws of Supernatural to bring this person back. It’s a very understandable way in which we’re seeing this guy.”
- “We’re going to see Charlie (Felicia Day) early on and in a really fun episode that goes back to the early days of the Men of Letters. Literally, the first two Men of Letters turning in the key to a bunker that has never been used before, 1935, and the first case they’re coming up against and it involves the Wizard of Oz in a way we’ve never seen that story been approached before.”
- “We’re going to see Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes). You see her, I think, in episode nine.”
- “Of course, you’re going to see Kevin (Osric Chau).”
All these details make me so look forward to the show’s return. Speaking of which, next the Supernatural cast spoke about what they are most looking forward to in season nine.
“What happens to Jared and Jensen in the first episode,” Singer discloses. “That story plays out over a good period of time and it develops but it’s something new for them. We’ve never done it before; I’ve never seen it done before. You’ll have to see it, let me know. I don’t want to oversell but I think you guys will like it.”
He also divulged specifics regarding a fun episode fans should look forward to. “The craziest one that is in the works for us…that’s in the works…is this…Dean Little where Dean can talk to the animals; something went a little awry. That’s our first crazy one and I’m sure there’ll be others in the line.”
Carver is most excited about starting this season with a “broken landscape.” “We don’t start the big bad right there from the get go and even our big bads, even Crowley. We found a stroke of humanity in him at the end of last year. We’re always trying to find other aspects of their personalities that maybe we haven’t showcased.”
He’s also excited about the moves the show is making for some of the characters. “There may be certain moves our fans don’t like characters make that the fans don’t like, particularly with the characters and their decisions and they’re going to have to live in that world. I’m talking around the big thing we can’t talk about.”
He teased us yet again! Since Craver already warned us he’s not into spoilers, I’m thankful he expanded his answer in a more general direction. “We created a lot of room this year and we’re going to be telling stories I think feel really fresh and a little bit from the past. We’re doing B stories and C stories in a way that we’ve never really done before — like spending a lot of time with Crowley or spending time with Casteel. We’re really watching these two guys come to grips with their new realities. It’s made for some really fun story telling!”
Supernatural returns to the CW Network on Tuesday, October 15 in a new time slot (9:00-10:00 p.m. EST.)
