Suits “Trust” Review. Shaking the Trees.

Rude awakening

Harvey (Gabriel Macht) and SEC investigator Sean Cahill’s (Neal McDonough) risky plan to get Mike (Patrick J. Adams) out of jail is set in motion now that Mike is on board to inform on his cellmate Kevin (Erik Palladino). Mike quickly realizes getting Kevin to open up is proving to be more difficult than everyone thought. Frank (Paul Schulze) isn’t helping matters any as he continues to breathe down Mike’s neck. Will Mike be able to keep Frank at bay while getting Kevin to open up, or will the deal Mike made with Cahill fall apart?

The prison scenes are captivating, especially now that Harvey and Cahill are meddling in prison affairs. Between Harvey’s role in making Mike sick in last week’s episode, “Turn,” and now Mike arranging, his new living conditions, I’m not sure my heart can take many more of these crazy twists. With a plan built on a house of cards, you feel the profound risk involved as Cahill, Harvey, and Mike attempt to get Mike out early. Given the show’s history, it’s safe to assume at least part of their plan will be derailed by someone. Am I the only one starting to wonder if Julius (Malcolm Jamal Warner) has a hidden agenda? Given all the one-on-one interactions Julius has with the inmates, is it possible he has been bought?

I absolutely relish the love-hate relationship between Harvey and Cahill. The banter between them during “Trust’s” opening scene is classic Suits. Cahill working with Harvey is a perfect replacement for Mike while he’s in prison. The legal maneuvering is riveting as Harvey and Cahill are forced to go head to head to keep up their ruse in order to help Mike. As excited as I was to learn Suits was picked up for a seventh season, the news I really want to hear is that McDonough is joining the cast as a series regular.

Meanwhile, Rachel (Megan Markle) learns a difficult lesson about becoming emotionally invested in a client when Professor Dunbar (Malcolm Gets) informs her the Innocence Project passed on death row inmate, Leonard Bailey (Glenn Plummer). It goes without saying, Bailey doesn’t take the news well; can you blame him? I really like that we don’t know whether Bailey is innocent or guilty. What do you think?

After a less than stellar start, I realize how much I am loving Rachel’s storyline this season. It takes her outside the firm without cutting the ties. We see Rachel doing what she loves in a way that still makes her feel connected to Mike.

Will Frank trust Harvey?

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the predicament Louis (Rick Hoffman) has found himself in with his new architect, Tara Messer (Carly Pope). OK, I laughed. Turns out, some of projects Louis hires Tara to work on don’t exist. Louis knows Donna (Sarah Rafferty) is the only person he can go to for advice and their scenes are hilarious. After royally messing up with Donna, it’s impossible not to laugh as Louis pleads, “Donna please, can’t we just pretend that I didn’t say what I said like we usually do?” It’s great to see Louis spending some time with his former secretary. Donna has a special relationship with each person in the firm, and it’s a delight anytime she gets to spend quality time with one of them. That said, I’m a bit surprised Donna doesn’t use the opportunity to remind Louis how he felt when he learned Mike had lied to him.

Jessica (Gina Torres) has been through hell and back over the last couple of seasons and it’s fascinating to witness a kinder, gentler Jessica emerge. While Harvey will always be a top-notch lawyer and Donna will always be Donna, Jessica has really evolved throughout the seasons. Sure, she can still be a cold-hearted badass when she needs to be but this is a more personable Jessica. I especially enjoy how her professional relationship with Rachel has grown, and I can’t stop laughing anytime Jessica has to deal with Stu (Ian Reed Kessler).

“Trust” is another great Suits episode that fires on all cylinders. What works so well about the episode is every character is given a moment to shine. The way the writers find a way to balance each storyline shows how very talented these people are. Season six is definitely shaping up to be one of Suits best!
