“That’s another you problem.” – Mike

Mike (Patrick J. Adams) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) go another round.

The back and forth game of backstabbing continues in “Litt The Hell Up” as Mike (Patrick J. Adams) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) press on in their battle to gain control of Gillis Industries. With each side digging in deeper, trying to one up the other, is there any end in sight?

Since “Litt The Hell Up” feels so familiar, I might as well repeat what I said in my “Pound of Flesh” review, “I’m exhausted from watching Mike and Harvey’s back and forth over the last five episodes.” Not only am I exhausted by it, I am bored by it. Harvey ticks off Mike so Mike has to get even. This upsets Harvey so he stabs Mike in the back. Mike tries to get even with Harvey but Louis (Rick Hoffman) is caught in the crossfire. Louis goes after Mike, Harvey goes after Mike. Harvey gets mad at Louis and Mike. Louis gets mad at Harvey…blah blah blah… I don’t care anymore.

From episode two through six, neither side seems to have gained any ground trying to take over Gillis Industries. Maybe lawyers and investment bankers who watch Suits understand the differences in the various moves being executed but to me, it all looks like the same thing being played out episode after episode, round after round. And, where is Walter Gillis (Michael Gross) during all of this?

During the first three seasons, there was a running joke on the show comparing Harvey and Mike to Batman and Robin. The analogy worked and the chemistry between the two men was a big reason why I enjoyed watching Suits. But this season, Batman and Robin have become Batman vs. the Joker as Harvey and Mike try to find a way to take down the other. What would have been an interesting shakeup for an episode or two has been diminished by the writers dragging things out for six episodes so far this season.

Meanwhile, Rachel (Meghan Markle) continues her streak of professing her love for Mike while putting herself in awkward situations that continually leave her alone with her ex-lover, Logan Sanders (Brendan Hines). Rachel seems clueless about why Logan keeps making moves on her until Donna (Sara Rafferty) points out she is contributing to the problem.

Donna: “Then, why were you at his condo this morning?”

Rachel: “I went to tell him that I didn’t want him to get the wrong idea.”

Donna: “Rachel, if you went to his place, you were giving him the wrong idea.”

I am disappointed in Rachel, not because she ends up kissing Logan, but because the kiss adds drama and extends the story line for at least one more episode, and probably more. And to make things worse, Rachel sticks her nose in where it doesn’t belong, putting Mike in a bad position, even though he doesn’t realize it at first.

While I’m frustrated with the Gillis/Logan twists and turns, the one story line I am enjoying is the SEC Investigation of Pearson Specter by Sean Cahill (Neil McDonough). Cahill seems to know how to push Harvey’s buttons and thanks to the dinner Harvey had with Mike in “Pound of Flesh,” Mike is now being dragged into the mess. Could this investigation be what brings Mike back to Pearson Specter? Unfortunately, this is the story line that is receiving the least amount of attention from the writers.

The final half of “Litt The Hell Up” is equivalent to a Three Card Monte game as the audience tries to figure out who pulled off the Gillis deal. By this point, everyone from Mike to billionaire financier Charles Forstman (Eric Roberts) has become such an asshole, no one really cares who wins. Even what should have been a touching scene between Louis and Harvey feels tainted because of all the crap that is thrown around leading up to it.

Who will Rachel (Meghan Markle) pick Mike or Logan Sanders (Brendan Hines)?

As much as it pains me to write this, this season of Suits has simply regurgitated the same episode over and over with only minor changes. Mike’s firing from Sidwell Investment should have been a welcome release from the Gillis story line, but I am afraid all it will do is shift the focus to the Logan/Rachel story line as Rachel struggles whether to tell Mike about her kiss with Logan. One way or another, we know Mike is going to find out; the only questions are when, and what will he do about it?

I welcome the writers trying to mix things up this season but the experiment has gone on far too long. They need to find a way to get Mike and Harvey working together again. As Louis once said, “Batman needs Robin.”
