Air Date: Thursday, December 12, 2013, 8/7c on The CW.
RATING:
“Put your hero hair on, Stefan. Let’s go find Elena.” – Damon Salvatore
I’m not too enthused with this week’s offering of The Vampire Diaries (TVD). I hate the title of the episode, for one, and it doesn’t really move along the plot. I have to say this feels like a filler episode, and not a very good one at that.
Observations and thoughts:
Try Pulling Instead of Pushing
Poor Damon (Ian Somerhalder). I always consider him the wiser of the Salvatore brothers because of his quick on-his-toes thinking. His escape from the nefarious basement of doom leaves much to be desired—banging on walls, blowing locks open with discarded bullets are not very impressive. Damon almost breaks my heart though because he seems to react without any thought for anyone else’s feelings. I’m inclined to believe he’s once again shut off his humanity in order to deal with the situations he’s facing. Somerhalder expresses Damon’s emotional turmoil with a simple look, although yelling gets the point across just as well.
Damsel in Distress
“What is that thing?” A dialysis machine, Elena (Nina Dobrev). Seriously? Who hasn’t watched at least one medical drama on TV? I don’t know what to say about how dumbed down Elena is. I don’t remember her being so clueless to what was going on in the world around her. She doesn’t have anything to get lost in like she used to. So what’s her excuse for being so ignorant? The entire time she’s with Wes, she asks “what are these tubes” and “what are you doing to me,” as if she can’t see what he’s doing. It bothers me because I see Katherine (Dobrev) and how amazing she is, only to have Elena ruin the effect with her stupidity. I know Elena’s smarter than this. I know I’m being hard on her, but Elena’s gotta step up her game if she’s going to prove her worth.
Katherine the Great
I’m beyond disappointed with the way Katherine is being slowly faded out of the show. Graying hair, vision problems, and shortness of breath are not becoming to this fierce young woman. She’s trying to outrun her fate and is failing miserably. Why? I don’t understand why it has to be old age that catches up with Katherine and takes her out. It’s not befitting her character. I would have rather seen a stranger from her past appear out of nowhere, kind of like Nadia (Olga Fonda) with the way she’s being x’d out. Why not speed up the process? Have it all happen at once? The dragging out of her demise is getting old. I’d hate for the writers to make Dobrev give up this role. She portrays Katherine brilliantly and delves into the role with enthusiasm. Katherine is where Dobrev shines. Please don’t take the light away from TVD.
Dr. Doom
“And you, holding people against their will, torturing them? How do you justify that?” Well, Wes (Rick Cosnett) responds, “science,” and I’m inclined to believe him. It sounds logical, right? Vampire blood is good for healing what ails humans so why not study it? Well, when you involve torture, all bets are off. Should we care that he’s studying and experimenting on vampires? Aren’t vampires supposed to be the bad guys? They eat people with little to no remorse. It’s who and what they are. But we’ve grown too attached to these vampires and can’t stand to see them hurt or being mistreated. I find it interesting how the viewers’ mentality can be altered—we learn to love the monsters instead of fearing them. It’s the human beings who turn out to be just as wicked as the creatures of the night.
Look Who’s Back
Enzo (Michael Malarkey) makes another appearance in “Fifty Shades of Grayson” as the resident bad vamp. I’m not sure I like where this is going. Unless he and Damon are going to take up their Augustine vendetta, I don’t want Enzo to be the new bad guy. It’d be good for Damon to have a friend again. He needs a new bestie to hang out with.
Random Thoughts
“Dr. Creepy Ken Doll” is quite the nickname for Wes. I like it. And hey, it is accurate.
Doesn’t Stefan (Paul Wesley) seem like the scarier of the two brothers? His threats are much more menacing than Damon’s. Wesley thrives as the heroic brother with a dark side. As long as Stefan doesn’t return to his broody emo side, it’s all good.
These vampires have heartbeats? Am I missing something again? How are they dead, yet have heartbeats? Where am I getting this? Enzo, of course. He says Wes injected him with a poison that stops his heart. Stops. His. Heart. Inconsistency, much?
Memorable and funny lines:
Damon: “Look, I’ve had a really crappy couple days, OK. If you’re implying what I think you’re implying—”
Katherine: “Why, what were you thinking? That our hot naked bodies collided in one unforgettable night of passion?”
Damon: “I’m gonna barf.”
Katherine: “Great. Then my work here is done. Too-da-loo!”
**
Stefan: “Where the hell you been?”
Damon: “Oh, you know, being held against my will, shot in the head, and now I can’t find Elena. How was your evening?”
**
“In a moment of weakness you eat chocolate or kiss the wrong boy. You don’t jump off a clock tower.” – Nadia to Katherine about how frivolous she’s behaving
**
“Vampires are now one shot away from craving their own kind.” – Wes on one of his ludicrous rants
**
“One night; one eternity. You’d never look at me the way you look at Elena, would you?” – Katherine to Stefan about what could have been
**
OK, Wes is a lunatic. His excuse for torturing vampires as a means of scientific research is no longer a viable one. He’s into the destruction of a species and must be stopped. So who will stop him? I don’t think we’ll know for a while as Katherine will be the subject on everyone’s mind. Will she finally meet her maker or will she figure out a way around it? I’m guessing she’ll find a traveler to help her hop into Elena’s body. Perfect solution, right? Let me know what you thought by leaving me a comment in the section below or on Twitter @ellemoe.
