Review: Lost Girl, S2 Ep 6, “It’s Better to Burn Out Than Fae Away”

Now, who didn’t see this coming—Bo (Anna Silk) and Lauren (Zoie Palmer) hooking up… again. The longing looks between the two and sharing stories about boys, no wonder Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) becomes nauseated. I would, too. What I wasn’t expecting—finding out Lauren has a girlfriend. OK, that’s pretty formulaic for TV but The Morrigan (Emmanuelle Vaugier) knows what she’s doing when she haggles with Bo to solve a case for her, telling her she’ll show her how to free Lauren from The Ash (Vincent Walsh) if Bo finds Jason (Dewshane Williams), a disoriented street artist painting Dark Fae (specifically, Vex) secrets all over town. Apparently, everyone knows Bo and Lauren have a thing. The thing is, with Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) out of the picture, Bo has an excuse to play house with Lauren. Bo’s heart may be broken but a little sexual healing always helps.
I can’t say I really enjoyed this episode. It was sort of all over the place, with Jason “outing” the Fae, Vex’s (Paul Roger Amos) reappearance, The Morrigan hiring Bo, and the curious presence of The Morrigan’s assistant, Bianca (Katie Boland), an Italian Fae with the power of persuasion. I expected Vex to be the villain because he’s annoying as hell. I’m not sure if the character is supposed to irk us or if Amos purposely chooses to play him as whiny with a pitchy voice, but either way, I have no sympathy for him. Apparently, I’m not the only one—The Morrigan seems equally annoyed, and believes Vex is trying to topple her from her position. It isn’t that clear cut, though. The Morrigan (a.k.a. Evony Fleurette Marquise) thinks Vex is behind Jason’s sudden surge of Fae graffiti but Vex stands to lose just as much as The Morrigan because exposing the Fae would only endanger them all. Both Dark and Light Fae complain that Bo hasn’t chosen sides, but that actually works in their favor because she usually solves their problems. Besides, who can they trust besides Bo to investigate without bias? When will Bo get the thanks she deserves? She’s the only noncommittal Fae they can rely on. She’s loyal to herself and to Kenzi.
The coolest scene in “It’s Better to Burn Out Than Fae Away” is the morning after Bo and Lauren sleep together, when Kenzi finds Lauren in the bathroom, looking for toothpaste. Can you say déjà vu? Kenzi found Dyson not too long ago in exactly the same position, looking for the toothpaste (“in the footlocker”). The only difference is Kenzi’s reaction. While she was thrilled to pieces with Dyson, she is repulsed upon seeing Lauren. Where I see Dyson as strong and reliable, I see Lauren as weak. That may not be a fair assessment because she’s human and Dyson is not; of course, he has more power and isn’t under anyone’s thumb as is Lauren. And Dyson may be with another woman for now, but I still want him with Bo. The Norn’s (Kate Trotter) curse must die!
So, Vex has a Dominatrix (Nahanni Johnstone) and a taste for pain. Hmm. Was I the only one who found the scene of his whipping sort of amusing? I just can’t take him seriously, I just can’t. He’s so over the top. What does he bring to Lost Girl? If he’s not effective comic relief (which we don’t need, because we have Kenzi, hello!), then what’s he good for? Should we be worried about how he wields his power?
Kenzi ends up being really helpful with this investigation because she spent a lot of time on the streets and, as a result, knows plenty of street artists. She uses her connections to lead her and Bo to Jason. I wish we could get more insight into her history, because I find her fascinating and want to know more. We need a flashback episode or two. I adore her even more for her loyalty. A lady who’s loyal is someone who has my respect.
What should we make of the last scene with Lauren speaking to someone who’s in a weird pod on life support? Could this be the elusive girlfriend The Morrigan speaks of? Lauren boasting about how wonderful and trustworthy Bo is strikes me as sort of a betrayal. If this is Nadia (Athena Karkanis), why would she speak of Bo in this manner? Is this her way of saying goodbye to Nadia? Lauren shouldn’t waste her breath because Dyson will be back. Mark my words!
