Stan Is Soooo Not The Man! Review: The Killing “Ghosts of the Past”

Air Date: Sunday, April 22, 2012, 9/8c on AMC

RATING:

“You care more about that damn girl than you do your own son.” – Greg Linden

Guess who's not up for the mother of the year award?

What’s happened to the rain? Remember how every episode would be cloudy and wet, making everything appear more depressing? I once thought the rain was a secondary character that moved The Killing in a certain direction with each passing day. The rain brings cold wind, washes away evidence and makes people feel miserable. Think about how being out in a downpour can chill you to the bone, distort your vision and soak through every piece of clothing. The rain lives and breathes distraction; with its absence, you’d think the investigation into Rosie’s (Katie Findlay) murder would move a little smoothly now. That’s so not the case.

Observations and thoughts:

Has Linden (Mirielle Enos) resorted to working in a locked office? Has it really gotten so bad at the department that she doesn’t trust anyone to see what she’s working on? Jeez! Who else is left to trust when you can’t trust the cops? Oh right, no one.

“You wanna smoke?” Holder (Joel Kinnaman) is an evil bastard *chuckle*. I know he means well, but he shouldn’t tempt Linden with cigarettes. She might not be able to abstain with the way things are going. But I wonder why she needs to hold onto one. Is it a reminder or something to help her get her head right? I freaked out a bit seeing her with a cigarette in hand. Even though she only puts it to her mouth as if going through the motions, I thought for sure she was going to light it. If she was to go back to that habit, I think that would signify her finally losing her grip on life. She’s faced with so much and it would be so easy for her to slip back into smoking again. Enos does such a fantastic job portraying the disheveled, hopeless single mother that I sometimes forget she’s acting. It has to be difficult channeling Linden’s various emotions as she juggles raising her son and solving a murder case. She’s consumed by both but seems to focus on one more than the other. I don’t want to say she’s a bad mother, but the evidence is right in front of us. She’s not doing right by Jack (Liam James) and she knows it.

I didn't see the kiss between these two coming, but what do you think will happen next?

Stan’s (Brent Sexton) trying desperately to get through to Mitch (Michelle Forbes). Do you think if he quit calling, she’d respond? She’s being selfish, handling her grief on her own. But maybe she needed to get away to prevent saying or doing something that would cause greater harm to her family. It’s possible seeing her two boys every day was doing more to hurt her than help get over Rosie’s death. Knowing they continue on living when Rosie can’t must be difficult. But running away doesn’t solve anything. Although, what she’s running away from may lead her back home.

So what I don’t understand is if Alexi (Tyler Johnston) is/was Rosie’s friend (love how these friends just keep crawling from the woodworks), why isn’t he being more cooperative? “Rosie hated her parents.” That can be said for most teenagers so I’m not surprised to learn this ‘secret’ of Rosie’s. How about the good stuff? Who was she hiding from? What big thing had she discovered? The same thing goes for Sterling (Kacey Rohl) and Jasper (Richard Harmon). They know something about what Rosie was into yet don’t want to blab to the po-po. I get it, but the girl is dead. If they figure keeping quiet keeps them in the clear, they’re wrong. Maybe they don’t know who killed Rosie, but any information they have is better than nothing. It’s frustrating as hell to watch these kids keeping mum when you know they could help Linden get ahead in the investigation. I always had the feeling Sterling wanted to say more but was too afraid to.

Councilman Richmond (Billy Campbell) is in a real bad way. Seeing him cry during a frustrating moment just about killed me. I’m still holding out that he’ll be touched by a miracle and regain the use of his legs. If not, I’m not sure what his role will be in The Killing. The damage has been done to him; he’s out of the mayoral race and isn’t adapting to his new life very well. What piece of the puzzle does he hold still?

This kid Alexi knows more than he's saying.

While Terry (Jamie Anne Allman) may have good intentions, she’s put herself in a compromising situation. Kissing Stan is a BFD but I think now she’ll consider moving out now and helping the kids from a distance. (At least I hope she will.) We know Mitch is doing her dirt (remember the guy she brings back to her motel room) while she’s out and about, but two wrongs don’t make a right. Though I must admit, I’m intrigued with Terry’s role in the Larsen family because we know the guy she’s seeing is somehow connected to Rosie. Now when we’ll be let in on the secret, I don’t know.

Not much more is learned this week but “Ghosts of the Past” is a solid showing. If Stan isn’t Rosie’s dad, then who is? I guess Mitch is more complex than we realized. I’d love to know what secrets she’s hiding. Stay tuned for another cryptic episode of the most engaging drama series on television.
