Sookie, the Foul-Mouthed Blood Bag. Review: True Blood – “Life Matters”

Season 6, Episode 69

Air Date: Sunday, August 11, 2013, 9/8c on HBO

RATING:

“Is that the Stackhouse girl? The weirdo?” – Caroline Bellefleur

I’m still not convinced True Blood is returning to its original roots, even with the cringe-inducing “Life Matters.” There are too many occurrences that could have happened sooner. Because hello, they are vampires! You know, super human abilities and all that. I see the subtle instances of humor, shock and awe, but where’s the good stuff? Why are the writers continuing to focus on the people viewers don’t care much about? I can’t for the life of me understand why a vampire show is focusing more on a human being killed by human methods. How about the body parts being ripped off and thrown aside like garbage?

Observations and thoughts:

Who’s The Real Boss?

I find it interesting that Bill (Stephen Moyer) can boss Sookie (Anna Paquin) around, yet he only strongly suggests things to Eric (Alexander Skarsgård). Don’t you wonder why it’s so easy for Sookie to put Bill in his place? Why he can rage at her and she rages right back? “You’re the god of all vampires, deal with your vampire.” Good point, Sookie. But Bill can’t handle Eric. I don’t know anyone who can. He’s the oldest living vampire we know of now, and if Bill can’t keep him under wraps, who can?

It’s About Damn Time!

I hate to see Steve go but he went out like no one else.

Does anyone find it surprising the amount of carnage left in Eric’s wake? He gets a little fairy blood in his system and doesn’t get high as a kite; he gets even. Why hadn’t he done half of what he did in this episode sooner? I gotta admit, it was kind of awesome seeing Eric take charge and do something, even if it was a bit gruesome. Splicing the scenes of decapitation and dismemberment with a funeral is a bit tasteless, folks. The vampires needed a champion I guess, and now they have one. (Until he flies away, of course.) As an aside, the vampires’ form of torture is reciprocal, but ridiculous. Even the crew bustin’ caps into the cases of True Blood is pointless. These are vampires. Why do they not act like vampires and use their strength or teeth? You get one thing right, True Blood, and then screw up the rest. Guess I shouldn’t expect much more than that, right?

Huh?

“And when you dream of me, dream of nice things.” Do all vamps know what their blood does to humans? I feel like I missed that. I have a vague recollection of Bill telling Sookie something about what will happen to her after drinking his blood, but with so much fanfiction and other stories floating around, I can’t keep this stuff straight anymore. I wonder if Eric gets a kick out of knowing Jason (Ryan Kwanten) will be having dreams about him. What’s that about? Can’t stick it to one Stackhouse, so he’ll stick it to another?

Present or Past

How did Sookie know she’d be finished her business with Bill in time for the funeral?

The flashbacks of Terry (Todd Lowe) seem more true to the character Charlaine Harris wrote about than what we’ve seen on True Blood since he walked on the scene. Terry is supposed to be nuts; he’s a vet suffering from PTSD who makes oddball comments and does even stranger things. Why didn’t we see this Terry during his time on the series? He became so Zen and knowledgeable without any counseling at all, that I’m not buying the true nature of his characterization. Nice sendoff though.

Saving Graces

Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) works that purple eye shadow like nobody’s business! I love seeing Ellis flaunt his stuff as Lafayette, though I’d love to see him doing more. Can’t say that enough. The man can drop some fries, can’t he?

Comic relief: Ginger (Tara Buck) screaming her ear piercing shriek while Jason covers his ears from the noise. Made my night. It is a quintessential Jason moment.

Alcide (Joe Manganiello) shows up to be with Sookie during her time of grief. Does Warlow (Rob Kazinsky) have competition? I’d be interested to see where this storyline goes, if it is, in fact, going anywhere. Alcide has always been my number two guy for Sookie. Telepathic werewolf babies would be cool.

Funny line:

Sookie to Bill: “Seriously? I’m gnawing on my own arm and you’re dropping fang on me?”

(Do you need me to mention how ridiculous this is?)

**

The look on Pam’s face about broke my heart. Eric can’t be gone for good.

“Don’t you dare leave me.” It seems Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) doesn’t have to stand too close to Eric to know what his intentions are. Is his grief so overwhelming he’d leave his first child to mourn? Eric doesn’t deal well with emotions (unless he has amnesia), so he’s running off to be all moody vamp where no one can see him. With next week’s finale looming on the horizon, what do you think will happen? Will Eric return? Will Bill continue to use his gentlemanly wiles to get what he wants? Will Jason have sweet dreams of the big Viking vampire? Dun, dun, dun, dunh…
