Sons of Anarchy returns on September 9 for its seventh and final season. After a nine month hiatus, fans of the show will be delighted to learn how quickly the story lines hit the ground running from the opening episode. As a teaser, I’ll add that the premiere will involve some nudity and a party.
As a preview of the upcoming season, here’s a list of the story lines and plot arcs that fascinated me most, and which I think fans should be on the lookout for:
- Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) is a changed man: dreamer Jax is long gone and has been replaced by full-outlaw Jax.
- The dynamics between the club and other criminal organizations have reached sky-high tension levels and survival mode is in full effect – think escalating DEFCON levels!
- SAMCRO has a few allies, and I expect the revelation of the exact purpose or strategy behind these relationships will be riveting.
- The “intelligence” gathered around certain events is dubious, and anyone with half a brain should be questioning the facts presented. But will anyone have the cojones to actually challenge the evidence?
- The lies do get bigger and bigger just as Katey Sagal shared with us during Comic-Con press interviews.
- Can’t wait to see what San Joaquin County District Attorney Tyne Patterson (C.C.H. Pounder) has up her sleeves.
- Wendy’s (Drea de Matteo) continued presence in Charming. What are her motivations, and will her mousy demeanor finally be a thing of the past?
- Nero continues to rock his signature cardigans as he presses on with his challenging role as peace maker between SAMCRO and other organizations. Traditionally, he’s been an advocate for dialogue as a primary means for conflict resolution but will battle lines be drawn for him?
- Let’s not forget how August Marks (Billy Brown) is way more upfront and unforgiving than Damon Pope (Harold Perrineau) ever was. He’s also an extremely patient but calculating man.
- The ways in which new sheriff Althea Jarry (Annabeth Gish) will leverage her experience in Stockton’s Organized Crime Unit in handling SAMCRO, and investigating Tara Knowles’ (Maggie Siff) murder.
In addition, a very important observation made by Sons’ Executive producer and principal director Paris Barclay during our Comic-Con interviews comes to mind: “There are a lot of hints in the premiere, and some are very early in the premiere, on what’s going to happen later on.” I can confirm that Paris is right on the money about this!

I agree that this is goin’ to be quite a season. All good things must come to an end, and I applaud Sutter and Co. for havin’ the sense to leave on a high note, as opposed to tryin’ to milk the franchise until it’s in the ‘jump the shark’ area.
Granted, Jax has never been my favorite character; I’ve gravitated to havin’ crushes on the more distinguished males – Kim Coates, Tommy Flanagan, Ron Perlman – but the show has always been about Jax’s journey in the club. He has learned that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely in his term as club Prez. There have been times when I’ve downright hated him. Yeah, the Jax fans are gonna come after me.
Now we see a Jax that has lost his rudder in the ocean of Life. With Tara killed (and I predict there is goin’ to be a major implosion if/when he learns that ‘mommie dearest’ Gemma did the deed), his reason to even try to walk the straight and narrow is gone. This season, we’re goin’ to be seein’ a Jax who has nothin’ to lose. Cold, cruel, ruthless is my prediction.
While many fans have moaned and groaned about the number of guest stars, includin’ Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love, I’ve taken the more ‘wait and see’ approach about this. I had my doubts back when The Hoff was brought in to SOA (Knight Rider and the original Snapper Forester on SOA? Eeeyack!) yet Sutter had Hasselhoff play a porn producer and it worked. Somehow, I suspect that these guest stars are also goin’ to work in ways we don’t expect.
All I can say about this season is if motorcycles had seat belts, we’d best buckle ourselves in and hang on for dear life. As it is, we can only hang on for dear life, cause it’s gonna be one HELL of a final ride.

Hi Myra, Thanks for the comment. I too, agree with the timing of the ending the series. Prolonging it would just dilute the quality of the story lines. What you think of Marilyn? I really liked him as a white supremacist. In my opinion, Jax’s journey is going to be a stressful, restless and brutal one.
Curious if the show is going to play around what Gemma did to Tara until the very end. I hope not as that will be super frustrating. I hope Jax finds out soon enough — if Gemma opens up to Nero and he decides to tell Jax out of concern (and good conscience) and then Gemma meets Mr. Mayhem.

Sutter only knows! My guess we’ll see Gemma until the very last episode. Thanks for the comment!
