I had the opportunity to catch up with Sons of Anarchy’s (SOA) Niko Nicotera (Ratboy) and David Labrava (Happy) during Comic Con inside the SOA press room on Sunday, July 27, 2014. Nicotera and LaBrava both shared the journey of starting with peripheral roles to now being part of SAMCRO’s inner circle. We discussed the current situation of the MC, guest stars, secrets, and upcoming projects.

Nicotera and Labrava expressed their gratitude for the fans, the opportunities, and the friendships they’ve gained through the show.

Loyalty and Brotherhood within the Club—

LaBrava: “The loyalty and brotherhood between the brothers. it’s pretty much there. This is a TV show, let’s not forget.”

Nicotera: “There’s always moments in which it’s been challenged but that’s a theme that’s always kind of there. I think the characters are always being confronted with needing to prove their loyalty.”

LaBrava: “It’s a TV show; they’re not really a motorcycle club that lives in rules. Those guys [the Sons] break the rules all the time but in reality, it kind of shows their humanity and the rules they’re breaking are secrets from each other like when Tig (Kim Coates) kissed Gemma (Katey Sagal) or little different things along the road. I like that they’re loyal to each other; everyone is fair game. I mean every group is fair game but not to each other.”

Tara’s Death and the Impact on the Club Members—

LaBrava:  “It’s going to be unveiled in the first episode. You know, everybody’s character is different, like Happy is just a silent soldier in a way. Bobby (Mark Boone Jr.) or Tigs or Chibs (Tommy Flanagan), who, on the show, are much closer to Jax (Charlie Hunnam). I think it will affect them deeper.”

Characters Becoming an Integral Part of the Show—

LaBrava: “It’s absolutely changed my life completely, what’s happened on the show.

Nicotera: “From starting from the periphery and kind of working your way in, when I first came into it, you’re kind of picking up on the atmosphere of the production and all the characters. It’s been a real organic kind of journey to slowly find your way into it; it’s felt like a real natural process. It’s really exciting to learn the things that you do about your character as you go along and to discover it as the story is revealing itself.

LaBrava: “It’s for the writers and for Kurt [Sutter] as they get to know us more and more, and more. I’m a writer, I write and it’s so much easier to write when you kind of know that person—how he talks, his mannerisms—than when you don’t.

Marilyn Manson Guest Starring on the Show—

LaBrava: “Marilyn Manson is a friend of mine. He’s my buddy; he’s amazing, he’s a genius, and that’s it. I’m not actually in scenes with him but it doesn’t matter. He’s an incredibly talented man.”

Nicotera: “I’m not doing any scenes with him but he’s a really interesting dude.”

Upcoming Projects—

Labrava: “I started ‘The Book of My Life’ at the end of last season and I’ll have it done this season. I also have my own film; I’m writing/producing/directing it. Prima Pictures is backing me up on that. I’m going to shoot probably for three or four days, and I’m going to shoot that right after this. I’m just blessed to meet all these people who gave me incredible opportunities.

Sons of Anarchy Fans—

LaBrava: “There would be no show without the fans. We are number one in 23 countries. I travel the world, I was in Bali and Thailand last year; I’m not the biggest dude on the show and I got recognized everywhere. The fans are amazing.”

As we wrapped up the interview, Nicotera and LaBrava didn’t hide their gratitude for the fans and how blessed they feel about the opportunities and friendships they’ve gained throughout the show. We only hope their characters make it out alive this season!
