Someone Dies... Review: "The Walking Dead" - 30 Days Without an Accident

Things sure have changed for the survivors of the zombiepocalypse. There’s a real sense of community along with changes that have made life easier for the gang. Crops, farm animals, an outdoor kitchen—you can’t say they aren’t making the best of things. So how has life changed for the better or for the worse? That remains to be seen. New relationships are a big part of the season four premiere of The Walking Dead and I think things are just getting interesting. The title of the episode “30 Days Without an Accident” is a relevant one. I wonder how long the prison will go without an incident next time.

Observations and thoughts:

Looks like Rick’s taken to farming like he has surviving.

Silence greets us during the opening scene. It surprises me as I’m not used to the peace; walkers are always somewhere in the background with their incessant moaning. It almost appears as if Rick (Andrew Lincoln) is having a normal day, checking his garden and animals, until I hear another voice in the background. Now it’s not that I thought batteries were long gone and forever lost to the world, but I wasn’t expecting to see Rick losing himself in his work while listening to some tunes. The power of music is greater than you realize when surrounded by gruesome and macabre sounds that have become the ‘norm.’

“I don’t like killing them on the fence. I hate it.” I can understand Tyreese’s (Chad L. Coleman) reticence to kill walkers that aren’t necessarily a threat. It’s almost unfair that the walkers are so easily taken out without the usual urgency. Yeah, it might sound like nonsense, but the writers are painting this season’s walkers in a different light. They’re humanizing them to a point. “People kill people. They still have names.” What a smart kid. I’ve always believed the honesty of children to be the most potent. They see the world differently than adults. We’re getting a lesson here too. Even though zombies are the enemy, and danger at hand, they used to be someone’s loved one. They used to be a mother, brother, cousin, or friend. Can that be so easily forgotten because they are now “different” in nature? Carl (Chandler Riggs) isn’t making friends with the new kids. He’s trying to be an adult, doling out the words of wisdom his father shared with him only moment before. I don’t like this about him. He’s well beyond the innocence of childhood but trying to crash through the wall between young adult and manhood with a wrecking ball. Thank goodness Rick always steps in to keep him in his place. Carl’s attitude could become a problem.

Has Sasha stepped up in Michonne’s absence?

Hershel (Scott Wilson) has been outfitted with a new leg! I suggested he have one so it’s good to see that detail come to fruition. Now that he’s back on two legs, I think his words will hold more weight. So of course, he’d be the one sent to make sure Rick gets a message. I wonder what we’ve missed during the hiatus. Seems much has happened between seasons. There’s now a council, the organization of the prison, and the romances that have popped up between the original and newer survivors. Not to mention Michonne (Danai Gurira) riding up on a horse. I get the feeling she’s distanced herself since Andrea’s (Laurie Holden) death. I wonder if that and other events from last season are what have changed Rick’s personality. He’s pulled back from the precipice of lunacy, but now I wonder if Rick has a death wish? Is he trying to prove something to himself or push himself to become the ultimate leader? I’d love to pick his brain—but not in a zombie way. That would be gross.

So what do you think about Clara (Kerry Condon) leading Rick to her zombie head husband and tries to make a meal out of him? Is her behavior laughable, believable, predictable? Watching the two walk through the woods, of course I was expecting something to go wrong. I just didn’t know it would be crazy time during the nature walk. But can you really call what a woman who loves her husband more than anything doing what she needs to keep him with her as crazy?

I’m a tad disappointed there’s no mention of the Governor (David Morrissey) except by Michonne. She can’t be the only one who wants to get after him for what he’s done. Daryl (Norman Reedus) should be leading the charge, though I guess he doesn’t know what the Gov had to do with Merle’s (Michael Rooker) demise. I have a feeling if Daryl does run into the Governor, he’ll find out.

Memorable/Funny lines:

Michonne: “I’ll go.”

Carl: “You just got here.”

Michonne: “And I’ll be back.”

(We know how easily these words can be turned into a lie.)

Clara to Rick about her husband and surviving: “He showed me the things that I had to do, or be willing to do. If he wasn’t still here, I couldn’t be.”

Beth: “I don’t cry anymore, Daryl.”

Out of the four, who’s the odd man out? I trust this Bob guy one bit.

With all the new characters being added to the show, I get a sense we’ll know exactly who’s going to bite it. You know how you watched Star Trek, and the one ensign wearing red would end up getting killed on a mission. I’m noticing the people who haven’t meant as much to us over the years or who don’t seem to have a big part in the overall story, they’re the ones who are expendable. You know I’m just kidding because as last season showed us, no one is expendable. The body count is rising and it’s sure to reach fever pitch with the dead turning up inside the prison. It’s about time for all hell to break loose. We can’t have too much normalcy without a bit of chaos.
