the-tomorrow-peopleSeason 1, Episode 8

Air Date: Thursday, December 4, 2013, 9/8c on The CW.

RATING:

“Keep me posted.” – Stephen Jameson

The Tomorrow People uses flashbacks to effectively tell a story without overloading us with too much information at once, otherwise known as info-dumping. I almost feel like the above quote is a tease for viewers it feels as though we’re not up to date on everything. There are so many secrets between the good guys that all come back to one person. I can’t wait to see the backlash from this one. I’m a bit frustrated with this current state of events. The Tomorrow People (TP) find themselves in a pickle and somehow manage to make it worse. The problem could have been solved very quickly, but doing so would have ruined the episode, right? What more could have been explored during “Thanatos” I don’t know, but we get quite a few juicy tidbits to chew on. John (Luke Mitchell) really isn’t what he seems. I think once the TP discover his secrets, John will be on the outside.

Observations and thoughts:

I want to believe Stephen's father is still out there somewhere.

I want to believe Stephen’s father is still out there somewhere.

Stephen (Robbie Amell) oversteps his bounds this time around. He doesn’t seem to think straight when Cara (Peyton List) asks him to do something. Stephen is all about impressing the girl, and keeping himself out of trouble later. Not only that, he bounces back and forth between Ultra and the TP headquarters without a care in the world. It bothers me that he doesn’t try to be less obvious in his absence from Ultra. He has to know he’ll be caught one of these days. Slipping up isn’t acceptable when it’s your life on the line.

Jedikiah (Mark Pellegrino) does have a human side after all. He’s not a raging, robotic TP killer all the time. He’s in love (or at least lust) with a TP. I didn’t see that coming. It seems Morgan (Carly Pope) is more than just a fling. I’m curious why Jed feels free to be with her (though in secret) while his hate for all things superhuman remains strong. Does his loathing of TP’s stem from an animosity he’s yet to get over? He loved John like a son and still does. It’s an interesting dynamic since their relationship now consists of them being enemies.

Jed is walking a tight line.

Jed is walking a tight line.

Seeing John with a clean shaven face is jarring. He looks young; his vulnerability is written all over his face and he doesn’t wear it well. Anger fuels him. “You’re just a boy looking for a family. That’s what you’ll always be.” Jedikiah hits the nail on the head with that prediction. But couldn’t the same be said for him? Jedikiah is so jealous of the TP. He wants to have that power, yet he’s afraid of it too.  No wonder he’s the champion for ridding the world of all TP. The mistake Jed makes is setting John up during his first assignment. It crushed John’s spirit; left him in a state of perpetual misery. Now John leads the TP with a purpose because he feels he owes it to them. What I want to know is, why does John put up with the charade? Why make them believe and count on a future that isn’t possible? That’s a losing game he’s playing.

“What the hell did you do?” Russell (Aaron Yoo) and his usual antics land the TP in a tough spot. But his comedy routine falls a bit flat, leaving me wanting. I know there’s depth to Russell’s character and there’s only so much Yoo can do with the material he’s given. I just expect something more with each new episode. Russell has turned into a one trick pony and it’s no longer funny to watch him crack jokes and nothing else.

The Founder (Simon Merrell) is creepy. I really don’t know what else to say about him other than that. I’m not surprised to find he’s *spoiler* a TP, nor did I expect anything dramatic to occur with the reveal. What I do find interesting is his close involvement in Ultra. How much do you have to hate yourself in order to want to extinguish everyone like you in the world? There’s a deeper story there.

Funny lines:

Russell: “I’m like a one man Ocean’s Eleven.”

**

Russell: “We’re off like a bra on prom night.”

The Founder is one to look out for.

The Founder is one to look out for.

“Thanatos” is good in a way, yet predictable in another. I was expecting to be shocked and awed but found myself only mildly entertained. The glimpse into John’s past is revealing yet implausible. I feel there are mixed messages being thrown around about John and Jedikiah. The cohesive tone of their story is beginning to unravel at the seams. You can’t expect me to believe Jedikiah would put someone else up to doing his dirty work. The man is lethal. I’m left wondering if Jedikiah was testing John for proof that John would never betray him. Or I could be way off base.
