Smart. Review: The Tomorrow People – “Sorry For Your Loss”

Season 1, Episode 6

“I’m here for you, man.” – John

The Tomorrow People throws two plot lines at us: one involves a member of the Tomorrow People (TP) band; the other a new break-out TP on the loose. Considering I’m not too invested in new TP’s (because we’ve yet to meet them all), I’m drawn into this particular TP’s story because she has a special link to Ultra. You have to know things won’t end well when Ultra gets involved.

Observations and thoughts:

The Musician

“Seven Years Ago” lines the bottom of the screen as a young man sits at a baby grand piano, making beautiful music. Having no idea who this could be I was pleasantly surprised upon discovering the mystery man’s identity. It’s Russell’s (Aaron Yoo) turn on the flashback train. Yoo is almost unrecognizable with a clean shaven face and outfitted in a suit. It’s not a bad look for him. You learn why Russell turns to jokes and fun times to get by. The goatee and mustache are part of Russell’s mask. He’s always hiding who he is because of who he was. He lived a stressful life, trying to please his father, yearning for his approval. It’s a sad story and I think all the TP have one to support their current fierce personalities. While I’m sympathetic to Russell’s plight, I think he’s an idiot. His penchant for theft seemed to grow as his powers continued to emerge and I don’t think he comprehends what he’s done with his life or how he’s injured others. “Sorry For Your Loss” is quite the eye-opener. I think I like the clean cut pianist much more than the egotistical jokester. We’ll have to see if Russell mends his ways or continues to live recklessly.

The Lair

So that’s what the TP are calling their underground digs? I kind of like it. But seriously, since their hideout isn’t such a secret anymore, why don’t they look for someplace above ground? Heck, they don’t have to reside in one place all the time, do they? Why not move to the other coast? “There’s something about our powers that forces us to congregate in one place.” Interesting. Ok, so since they’re stuck down in the dumpy train depot, the least they can do is make the place homier. There are no pictures, fluffy pillows, or color on the walls. Bo-ring. Spice it up a bit and maybe no one will want to run off all the time.

The Romance

Well, well, well … I’m flabbergasted. The amount of tonsil hockey going on in “Sorry For Your Loss” surprised me considering the overall theme to the episode. Stephen (Robbie Amell) and Cara (Peyton List); Jedikiah (Mark Pellegrino) and his mystery woman Morgan (Carly Pope). What in the world is going on? Talk about keeping secrets. I want to know what John (Luke Mitchell) is going to say when he finds out his girl is no longer his girl. I saw this coming, not sure how I feel about it, but I can’t say I mind it. The chemistry between Amell and List is convincing enough to make me believe Stephen and Cara might produce some serious heat. Did anyone else expect John to walk in on these two? I sure did. <evil grin>

Jedikiah has a secret—one of many, I’m sure. I wonder why he feels he’s outside of the law; a law he upholds as a kind of agent provocateur of Ultra. He’s the best at getting TP’s to trust him. His charm and comforting smile pulls you in just before he says ‘gotcha!’ We have to get his back story next. I’m dying to learn a few secrets about Ultra’s ‘leader.’

The TP Leader

“If everyone found out I can kill or that Jedikiah warped me, do you think they’d still look up to me?” I never knew John to be the insecure type. I think he’s in denial as well. The TP wouldn’t look at him differently in a bad way; they’d look to him as their ultimate leader, the only reason for their survival. His ‘glitch’ makes him a complete bad ass, even if it is in a negative way. John can’t help what was done to him. But if he’s able to save lives because he can pull a trigger where the other TP can’t, should he feel guilty about it? John is more than what he can do. He’s smart, thinks quickly on his feet, and cares about those he feels responsible for.

Random thought:

Do you notice the date on Russell’s dad’s obituary? It’s the same as the air date for this episode of The Tomorrow People. Freaky, right?

Memorable and funny lines:

Cara to John: “You think I’m upset because you can kill?” (Men really have no clue.)

John: “Do you know what I think?”

Russell: “I’m too hung over to mind read.”

I enjoyed “Sorry For Your Loss” and glimpsing Russell’s past. I’m not sure if I like him more or less now. It looks like we’re done peering into what was and will continue onto the what is.
