Review: The Big C, S3, Ep. 307 – “How Bazaar”
Air Date: Sunday, May 20, 2012 9:30PM E/P on Showtime
Rating:
WOW! How did I not see this epic betrayal coming from Dave (Hamish Linklater) and Maxine (Mamie Gummer)? I think part of my jaw is still on the floor. And Adam (Gabriel Basso) is being such a little shit. I know he’s angry at his mother but you can’t sit there and tell me that God condones this kind of behavior from a child toward his parents. Adam’s behavior is regressing since he’s hooked up with Jesse (Kailie Torres). How many other guys do you think she’s been with? I wouldn’t be surprised if she hasn’t been with every guy, including the pastor, in the Bible group. Why does she always need to use sexual persuasion to get what she wants? Unzipping her jacket to coax Adam into giving away more than his prized baseball cards for the church bazaar seems a bit much. Whatever happened to good old-fashioned logic; you know – pros versus cons? Now it’s ‘I’ll show you my boobs and sleep with you if you do this or that.’ Spare me. Writers, please, enough with the religious stuff and let’s have more dark comedy and fun like Sean’s (John Hickey) “thruple.”
Last time we saw Sean, he was heading upstairs for a little fun with married couple Tim (Bryan d’Arcy James) and Gizelle (Tammy Blanchard), whom he lovingly refers to as “Gizim,” for short. I giggle-snorted on that one! Sean is my bright star; you just know the writers have cooked up something deliciously salacious for him to say. The fact that Adam invites Sean to the church bazaar and not his mother is huge but Sean taking his new boyfriend and girlfriend along is priceless. I will admit the cotton-candy sharing kind of grosses me out. I mean, all the finger licking and smacking was a bit much for my tastes, although it did give me a craving for cotton candy. Weird.
Cathy (Laura Linney) is dealing with the hole her wall that she bashed in, jumping the gun on creating a window for the nursery. It makes me feel that much more sympathy for her when she finds out about Dave and Maxine’s scam. And after Adam’s horrid display of manners when Cathy objects to his decision to give away the car she bought for him, she turns into Alexis again and throws back a few cocktails at The Naked Turtle (I love the name of this bar). But bartender Kirby (Lee Tergensen) offers up another solution to help expel some of her anger and hostility – target practice.
Observations:
Has Cathy’s clinical trials stopped? It seems her cancer and treatments don’t seem contributory to her storyline. I see the bandages on her fingers but haven’t seen her go to or heard her mention the treatments in a while. This makes me think something major will crop up before the season finale.
Money seems to be oozing from Cathy’s wallet. She’s being a tad too generous with her funds, especially with regards to Dave and Maxine. I guess Paul (Oliver Platt) is raking in the dough with his gigs with Joy (Susan Sarandon).
Speaking of Joy, she makes a pass at Paul; like we didn’t know that was going to happen. I was just waiting for them to finally spring it on us but I didn’t expect it to be so…brazen. But, like Paul mentions, Joy doesn’t have a filter, does she?
Funny moment:
Sean trying to find something in his house to use for deodorant is hilarious. And his explanation to Cathy about dating a couple is even more so!
Cathy: “Did you just say couple?”
Sean: “Yep. I’m dating a couple which makes us a thruple.”
Cathy: “Ok, you’re saying that like it’s a thing; I doubt it’s a thing.”
Sean: “Oh no, it’s a thing. Married couples like you and Paul are so 1998 when the new paradigm of true relationship fulfillment lies in the power of three like-minded people coming together to form a social, sexual, you know, six-legged octopus of love and camaraderie.”
***
While I enjoyed the episode, I wasn’t thrilled with it until the ending. That shocked me and I really felt terrible for Cathy. But we have to wait two weeks for a new episode due to the holiday weekend.
