“Trust thyself only, and another shall not betray thee.” Wise words by Thomas Fuller, and they set the stage for “Trust.”
I didn’t notice it right away but by the end of the episode I realized I was smiling. While there are moments I was totally ‘LOLing’ (and there are many of those moments), I find myself so engrossed and entertained, I have a perma-grin while watching Wilfred.
The humor in this show shakes my funny bone to the core! I attribute it to the right combination of two actors who work well with each other and obviously have great chemistry. Ryan (Elijah Wood) has trust issues with women. He broke up with his last girlfriend, who’s now getting married, because she put her finger in his butt. Wilfred thinks Ryan was an idiot for letting her go simply because she “knuckle-busted” his “anus hole.” I don’t know if I can put it as eloquently (giggle).
Despite Ryan’s anal trauma, he asks Wilfred if Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann) talks about him. Wilfred refuses to violate his master’s trust but entices Ryan to prove himself by taking him to the beach. Problem – no dogs allowed on the beach. Wilfred loses it. “Christ, it’s the 21st century! I cannot believe these racist rules still exist!” Lessons in friendship, trust, and loyalty are about to take a twisted turn.
Somehow Ryan gets saddled into taking Wilfred to the vet when Jenna complains about Wilfred’s horrible doggie breath. Things take a dark turn when Wilfred realizes Ryan lied about them going to the movies to see his favorite actor, Matt Damon, when they arrive at AMC (Animal Medical Center, not the theatre chain). By the way, Wilfred’s strange obsession with Damon is hysterical! The hilarious diatribe between Ryan and Wilfred has me in stitches!
Wilfred: “Well…not what I expected.”
Ryan: (nervous) “It’s not as big as the IMAX…”
Wilfred: “No, no, no, that’s not what I mean. I just thought, now we’re best mates, you might want to play a bit of ball – at least buy me a drink first but no, you skipped all that and went straight to ROOTING ME IN THE ASS!”
Ryan: “Ok, I lied, but it’s for your own good – Jenna asked me.”
Wilfred: “Ahh, there’s the real story behind this treachery. You’re using me to get to my girl. I open the door to my heart and you BETRAY ME!”
One of my favorite scenes is when Ryan introduces the vet, who appears to be East Indian.
Ryan: “Wilfred, this is Dr. Bangachon (Rodney To).”
Wilfred: “I need a doctor, not tech support.” (So wrong, but so funny.)
So what’s the dark twisted part of this lesson? Wilfred tells Ryan something about Jenna – she has a dick. Yes, a penis. When Jenna brings over cheesesteak sandwiches and beers to thank Ryan, all he can do is ask probing questions to find out if she does or doesn’t have a penis! It’s hilarious! Wilfred plays dirty but I think he’s good for Ryan. He’s pulling Ryan away from his comfort zone. While it’s a slightly demented way of doing it, it works brilliantly.
Also guest starring in “Trust” is Chris Klein who plays Drew, Jenna’s boyfriend from Wisconsin. Could Drew put the kibosh on Ryan’s pursuit of Jenna? Not if Wilfred can help it. I wonder if Jenna ever smells the bong water or marijuana on Wilfred because he sure does smoke a lot of it!
Wilfred also offers up little nuggets of wisdom that I call Wilfrisms. During a conversation about farts, Wilfred explains you can learn a lot about people by their gaseous expressions. “Joy farts – they are amazing….Some people think that eyes are windows into the soul – couldn’t be more wrong.”
