“In general, pride is at the bottom of all great mistakes.” ~ Steven H. Coogler
Warning: “Pride” contains…ah, to hell with it…it’s got some raunchy (albeit hilarious) stuff!
Ok, first I have to say how much I loved Jane Kaczmarek’s guest appearance in this episode. I know she has a raunchier edge from her days on Malcolm in the Middle but she really goes above and beyond as Beth, a high powered, professional business woman, and single parent, who is, shall I say, sexually deprived.
Having gone through his savings, Ryan (Elijah Wood) is pinching pennies but he refuses to ask his sister Kristen (Dorian Brown) for money. When he contemplates getting a job, Wilfred (Jason Gann) has some sound advice for his friend, “That’s just stubborn pride. She’s your sister, mate. She loves you. Bleed the bitch dry.”
Along with the advice, Wilfred finds an alternative solution to Ryan’s money woes – he purposefully steers Ryan’s car into another, thinking Ryan can sue—except for the tiny fact that Ryan isn’t a lawyer anymore, and, oh, he’s “between insurance companies.” While Ryan speaks with Beth (Jane Kaczmarek), the other driver, Wilfred spies a beautiful stuffed giraffe in the lady’s back seat. Tsk-tsk, Wilfred – cheating on Bear like that. And then to dress her in a giraffe suit later…so wrong, funny as hell, but wrong.
Now this is where the hilarity ensues. Wilfred makes another suggestion to Ryan to help him get out of paying for the damages to Beth’s SUV. “Just like every woman, a delicate flower. She may say she wants your money, but what she really needs is nurturing, tenderness, and a nasty sex limp.” Ryan unwittingly gives her the inclination that he’s on board with having a little ‘R’ rated fun but when he goes to her house for dinner, things take quite an interesting turn.
I cannot begin to tell you how much I laughed, chortled, giggle-snorted, and choked on my iced tea watching the dual sex-scenes play out. While Ryan is basically being raped by Beth, Wilfred is doing nasty and perverted things to Raffi (the giraffe). But what really kills me is Beth pushing Ryan’s head down towards her nether regions. I mean, after all, “…wittle Bethy bunny just got a bwazilian.”
I’m beginning to think Wilfred is actually Ryan’s alter ego. Again, Wilfred is making noise in the basement while Kristen visits, but yet she doesn’t question what the noise is. And if you notice, when Ryan takes a potty break from servicing “wittle bunny,” the reflection in the window looks like Ryan with dog ears. Of course he opens the window to find Wilfred taking a lengthy piss all over Beth’s garden.
I could go on to tell you every single detail of the scenes I loved in this episode but you have to watch to understand what I mean. For instance, how does Wilfred get into the dominatrix gear with his hands tied behind his back? I mean, Raffi is a stuffed animal. I think Wilfred is the Mr. Hyde to Ryan’s Dr. Jekyll.
Another funny line:
Wilfred, in a posh, English accent tells Ryan, “Nonsense my dear boy….You can’t have ‘dinner’ without ‘inner’ as in ‘get up in her’.”

Yes, Wilfred does speak with an Aussie accent but in this particular scene, he uses a posh British accent for effect. 🙂
