“Love is a willingness to sacrifice.” ~ Michael Novak
“Sacrifice” opens on a gorgeous sunny day at the beach as Ryan (Elijah Wood), who is attempting to read a book, is severely distracted by a beautiful Italian woman, Cinzia (Gabriella Pession). She is the kind of woman who can help Ryan forget about his neighbor Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann). However, with Wilfred (Jason Gann) doing an excellent job of cock-blocking, Ryan’s really having to rethink his obligations. “Never under estimate the power of a dream.” Those words will have a vastly different meaning by the end of “Sacrifice.”
Wilfred: “Uh, you can’t go with her. You promised you’d pick up Jenna’s dry cleaning and be home by 2 for the cable guy.”
Ryan: “You expect me to ditch a girl like that for dry cleaning?”
Wilfred: “We all have to make sacrifices, Ryan.”
Ryan always goes out of his way for Jenna. Yes, they are friends, but he’s basically her “lap dog,” jumping at every opportunity to help her in the fantasized hopes he’ll win her from Mr. “Cheboygan Lager,” Drew (Chris Klein). So, I am pleasantly surprised when Ryan agrees to go to Italy with Cinzia! It’s impulsive and totally unlike Ryan – I love it! I have to say it was a little weird for me to watch Wood doing a make-out scene. I know he’s 30 years old but he just looks like such a young kid that it makes me feel a little dirty for watching. (But I toughed it out. haha)
Ryan is selling everything in preparation for Italy, much to the chagrin of Wilfred. I also think it’s pretty selfish of Jenna to keep Ryan at arm’s length, telling him how much she appreciates him and how much she’ll miss him. I’d love to say she wants to have her cake and eat it too but I never understood that saying much – I mean, if you have cake, why wouldn’t you eat it? Jenna has her cake – Drew – and she has a slice of pie on the side – Ryan.
Drew (Chris Klein) flies in to comfort Jenna after she gets fired for a hysterical on-air blunder during her first day as the new anchor for the 12 o’clock news. I couldn’t help but chuckle when Drew greets Ryan at the door with another stupid nickname – “rhinoceros.” I think that trumps “rye-bread.” Even Wilfred tries in vain to cheer Jenna up, but not even “undies on the face” seems to be working. Wilfred feels guilty about leaving the “pot candy” out which caused Jenna to become so hilariously uninhibited. So he drinks shots of toilet water to self-soothe. Toilet water…really?! While it’s a bit comical, it would have been so much better had the water been blue. Plain water is so boring.
In usual Wilfred fashion, he somehow manipulates Ryan into foregoing his Italian fling to represent Jenna in her law suit against the television station. Wilfred’s cunning astounds me at times. His ability to coerce Ryan so completely makes me wonder if Wilfred is actually Ryan’s conscience manifested. But, it speaks volumes about Ryan’s intentions of leaving with Cinzia – if he really wanted to go, he would have. So why did Ryan say no at first, then change his mind, but end up not going anyway? It seems all the life lessons Wilfred’s been teaching Ryan haven’t sunk in. Is Wilfred the only one who’s allowed to be selfish?
Tune in to the season finale of Wilfred next Thursday Sept 8th at 10PM E/P only on FX.
