“Doubt must be no more than vigilance, otherwise it can become dangerous.” ~ George C. Lichtenberg
I’m going to be frank here – Wilfred is beginning to fuck with my mind. Seriously, I don’t know what to think anymore. I still adore the show, but it’s kind of like one of those optical illusion puzzles. You know the ones you keep staring at but no matter how much you cross your eyes, you can never quite make out what you’re supposed to be looking for.
I relish not being able to figure out what exactly is going on with Wilfred (Jason Gann). Is he really Ryan’s (Elijah Wood) best friend or is there some master plan to sabotage Ryan’s future? If it’s the latter, what’s the reason? Ryan’s cleaning up his act but Wilfred is perturbed.
Ryan: “I’ve never felt better. Why are you trying to undermine my confidence? It’s like you’re working against me.”
Wilfred: “Working against you? (blows smoke in Ryan’s face) Come on, mate, have a little faith. Don’t you think you’re being a bit paranoid?”
Ryan looks away as a mysterious man drives by. Everything is in slow motion.
Wilfred: “Look Ryan, I know you got your doubts, but you’re my best friend. I love you, mate. I’d never do anything to harm you.”
Is that really true? Bruce (guest star Dwight Yoakam) begs to differ. It looks like Wilfred and Ryan’s relationship isn’t so unique after all. Bruce asks Ryan how well he really knows Wilfred which makes me wonder – why did Wilfred choose Ryan? Why is Ryan able to see a man in a dog suit while everyone else sees a dog?
What’s more curious is how Bruce knows which restaurant Ryan takes his blind date to. Wilfred is the only one who knew because he set up the date. However, Ryan’s date isn’t with the girl he met online, oh no. Wilfred picks Angelique (guest star Katy Mixon), “an alcoholic blow-job machine.” Mixon is hilarious! Her animated explanation of how the gross email almost stopped her from going on the date makes me laugh but I love her assessment, “gross is kinda hot, right?…And all that stuff about the post office…I don’t really know what snout rape means, but I hate my mailman too.”
Bruce knows a lot about Wilfred’s behavior – down to the tampered condom which falls out of Ryan’s wallet at the table. But it’s the final confrontation between Bruce and Wilfred that leaves me flustered. Heeding Bruce’s advice, Ryan takes Wilfred into the woods to leave him there only for Bruce to show up with a gun. During the scuffle, Bruce drops the gun and as he grabs a rock to smash Wilfred’s head, Ryan grabs the gun and pulls the trigger.
Wilfred: “Well done, Ryan. Well done.”
Ryan: “Look what you made me do!”
Wilfred: “Oh no, this was your choice.”
Ryan: “What are you talking about? I just killed a man!”
Wilfred: “Or did you?” (Shoots Ryan with the gun)
Ryan: “Blanks! What the hell is going on?”
Wilfred (wryly): “Isn’t it obvious?”
Ryan: “No! It’s not obvious! Nothing is ever obvious with you!” <Exactly my point!>
Bruce gets off the ground and offers an explanation.
Bruce: “This shit is complicated.” <Gee, thanks for clearing it up!>
Wilfred (shakes Bruce’s hand): “Good game, Bruce.”
Bruce: “I’ll get you next time.”
Wilfred: “Oh, we’ll see about that.”
“Good game….I’ll get you next time?” What sick twisted game is Wilfred playing and why is he playing it with Ryan? And how the hell does Bruce know Wilfred?
Funny moments –
Wilfred sniffing butts at beach yoga class,“Hmm…whimsical, light bodied bouquet – crisp with a hint of peach and a lingering rotten egg finish…exquisite.”
Wilfred tells Ryan how he met Bruce, but they sound more like plots to some famous Matt Damon movies – Good Will Hunting, The Departed, and Bourne Identity. Oh that Wilfred, such a jokester!
Tune in to Wilfred, Thursdays at 10PM E/P only on FX. Only one more episode before the season finale!
