Review: True Blood, S4, E46 – “Burning Down the House”

Air Date: Sunday, August 28, 2011 9PM ET/PT on HBO

I promise you, I try hard not to complain but I’ll be damned if I’m able to help myself. Just when I thought I’ve seen it all, True Blood says, “Oh no you ain’t, hookah!” *said in Lafayette’s voice*

Let me just say a few things here: What. The. Hell?

Honestly, I love the opening action sequence. It’s exciting and makes me think I’m in store for something amazing. Well, “Burning Down the House” is good, but it isn’t amazing. It’s more of the same indescribable confusion that someone *cough* Alan Ball *cough* thinks is funny. Yet, I’m not laughing.

Skipping ahead much? I don’t get why Ball feels the need to rush things. There’s time to get through at least one storyline in a season. The combining of various plots feels off when they should be spread out a bit and explored thoroughly. There’s a thing called pacing yourself… This is in reference to the long awaited Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and Sookie (Anna Paquin) relationship. They fell in love so quickly and are still in love (applauds), though Sookie also loves Bill (Stephen Moyer). As Eric says, “How is that possible?” Is there really a need for a potential Bill and Sookie reconciliation when we’ve just gotten used to the idea of Eric and Sookie being together? This love triangle takes away from what they have and makes it seem like nothing more than a trivial fling. Why not give the lovebirds their due and let them be together now that Eric is back in charge of his mental faculties. “I remember everything. Nothing’s changed.” Oh, but yes it has Eric, yes it has.

Observations:

I’d like to think with Bill being a Civil War vet (ha, ha) he’d be a better shot. He didn’t shoot to kill the Marnie (Fiona Shaw) controlled vamps at the Tolerance rally. Probably self-preservation and all that. Lame! If he wants to play the bad ass, he needs to be the bad ass with no hesitation.

Sookie uses her glow hands once again. Really? That’s what breaks the spell on Eric? And I won’t mention why she’s able to do it because it’s too upsetting. I don’t know if I buy her Fae powers being able to counteract witchcraft. They seem to be on two different planes. Can you really call a witch a supernatural being? But damn it’s good to see the sheriff back! Though I will miss amnesia Eric’s vulnerability and aloofness.

Nan (Jessica Tuck) is not to be fucked with. Or so I thought. Do you buy her backing down from Bill? She throws out threats when they all bunk down for the night, but I’m a bit concerned she may be losing her edge. Nice to see her using a pencil to stake someone, though. I knew it could be done (inside knowledge from the books) but seeing it was awesome. What do you think about the size of her pencil compared to the much larger “stake” Eric fashioned for departing his liege? Bigger stake for the bigger threat, maybe?

I could feel Hoyt’s (Jim Parrack) pain. I don’t like to see a grown man cry and seeing him so sad over Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) nearly broke my heart. Nearly broke my heart—he needs to grow a pair and go find Summer (Melissa Rauch). She could bake him some more biscuits or something. But what is going to happen when Hoyt finds out Jason (Ryan Kwanten) isn’t the friend he thinks he is?

Debbie (Brit Morgan) is a whore. Enough said.

Is Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) more powerful than we know? Not only does he not back down from Marnie’s force field but his inner Brujo comes out to help him get through it. How cool is that?!

While I won’t miss Tommy (Marshall Allman), his scene with Sam (Sam Trammell) and Alcide (Joe Manganiello) is very touching. You know it had to be hard for Sam to watch his brother die like that. Now he’s out for blood and Alcide’s helping. Going against the pack Mister ‘Lone Wolf?’ Trouble is a brewing amongst the supes in Bon Temps. Could be a little foreshadowing for next season.

Funny lines:

Nan to Bill: “What’s the deal with your little dairy maid and her lightning trick?”

**

Jason to Sookie about Hoyt: “He drank 11 of my beers; passed out and started farting Continuously.”

Sookie: “Jason, I didn’t need to know that.”

**

Jessica on their impending battle: “I don’t care what happens as long as I get to kill shit!”

I’m a little upset about the way the witch war is being played out. I just don’t get it. It’s going beyond the simple intentions of Marnie and Antonia’s (Paola Turbay) revenge against the undead. And with only two more episodes left, my excitement for the season finale is at a “meh.” But I will stick it out and see what happens.
