Air Date: Sunday, August 12, 2012, 9/8C on HBO
RATING:
“Make this go away.” – Hoyt Fortenberry
I always wonder what the first few minutes of True Blood will infer about the episode. If it starts off on a funny note, does the episode contain laughs? If there’s a serious but poignant moment, will the show head down the path of drama, drama, drama? So, as “Gone, Gone, Gone” begins, we find the fictional world where True Blood exists has changed for the worse. And I have to admit, it rings true throughout the entire 50 minutes that follow.
Observations:
The Authority storyline aside, I enjoyed this undertaking. I wasn’t expecting too but I laughed and almost shed a few tears as I watched this week’s foray into the world of vampires, shifters and other wickedness. While not much seems to happen in “Gone, Gone, Gone,” a few characters are departed and some storylines take a turn for the interesting.
Hoyt (Jim Parrack), being one of the most charismatic secondary characters brings forth emotion from me I wasn’t expecting. The pain evident on his face as he tells Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) and Jason (Ryan Kwanten) he can’t live with their memory is a testament to Parrack’s skill. “Take this hurt from me so that I can go on and have my life. Please.” Not only that, both Woll and Kwanten bring out the big guns too. Given the material they have to work with, they delve deep to touch the humanity in their characters (Jessica being a vampire, of course) and putting it all out there for viewers to feel and relate to. Their scene alone saves the episode from being a complete bust.
Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bill’s (Stephen Moyer) arc finally comes to a head. I’m not sure where it’s going but I see now they will be unified once again with a sole purpose—to protect Sookie (Anna Paquin). (As an aside, way to go hiding Paquin’s baby bump so obviously. Empire waist shirts, baggy pajamas and a pillow?! Surely this could have been done better?) She’s the fairy Russell (Denis O’Hare) talks about and we know he can get to her simply by walking into her *ahem* Eric’s house, and claiming her. So what will they do to stop him? Can they stop him? I’m not sure I want them to because I like the danger Russell brings to the scene. I like knowing he’s the most powerful being among them and he can’t be stopped. “I am 3,000 years old and stronger than all of you combined.” He proves that with mere words and not one vampire moves to touch him. How badass is that?
Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Tara (Rutina Wesley) prove they ain’t no punks. Well, at least Tara takes matters into her own hands. I am curious to see how Pam will handle having a progeny who steps up to defend her. You’d think Tara would cow down and let Pam run the show, but she doesn’t falter one bit. I like this Tara. She’s in charge of her life once again and without having to be thrown into some stupid fighting ring. I’m so glad those days are long gone. Leaving New Orleans was the best thing she’d done. Now if True Blood is going to stay true to form, what kind of tribute will Tara have to pay as penance for murdering another vamp? He has a maker… Will this bring in a new character or will the consequences for her actions be swept under the rug?
Russell lets everyone know he isn’t just some “lap dog” to be told what to do. You could see on his face the contempt he feels for the Authority. He hasn’t hidden it, so why does Salome (Valentina Cervi) look so surprised when he throws a hissy fit? Might I say, what a fantastic hissy fit it was. O’Hare stole the scene with panache. The way he flipped Russell’s southern accent to a more ancient European one blew my mind. I wasn’t expecting it and loved how it made Russell appear just as ancient as, well… as he is. Why did no one put a leash on him sooner? Oh right, he’s Russell Bloody Edgington. That’s why!
“Gone, Gone, Gone” hasn’t fooled me, but it does make me think the writers are putting True Blood back on the right path. The thinly veiled plot seems to finally be making its presence known and we might actually get some answers to long overdue questions. Not to get too deep on you here but there’s something major in the works here. Keep an eye on Bill. He knows how to flip the switch and betray mofos in a heartbeat. I don’t think Eric will be fooled a second time though. At least I hope he won’t. Bring back the Viking!
