Air Date: Thursday, October 25, 2012 8/7c on The CW
RATING:
“Don’t let your pride leave you all alone.” – Meredith
I think I’m getting soft in my young age (har, har!). I can’t count how many times I winced and got queasy during “The Rager.” I couldn’t stomach the scenes featuring a realistic hypodermic needle and bloody bite. That’s a good thing for The Vampire Diaries though because I’ve never been one to shy away from an episode because of a little blood. The show is slowly pulling its way out of that horrid slump it fell into with the season opener. “The Rager” shows us just what it means to be alone in the cruel world, and what that can do to a person, uh…. vampire.
Observations and thoughts:
“The Hunter’s Mark” (that mysterious tattoo we keep hearing about) is invisible to anyone who isn’t a vampire hunter or potential hunter. Very interesting. Could this be the start of some amazing conflict for Jeremy (Stephen R. McQueen)? Most of the people he’s loved—both past and present—are vampires including his two girlfriends, his sister… Alaric (Matthew Davis). But you know what I forgot, Jeremy hates vampires too, doesn’t he? Talk about a conflict of interest.
Now tell me, don’t you wish Alaric were around to take on Connor (Todd Williams)? I know I do. How awesome would that confrontation be? Considering Alaric was a vampire hunter himself, how do you think he would handle dealing with this loose cannon in Mystic Falls? In the interest of shaking things up a bit, I think Jeremy should take Connor up on his offer of training, simply to learn the tricks of the trade. It’ll give the poor kid something to do since there aren’t any ghosts around for him to talk to.
I’m no longer sure of Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) purpose. Why is he still around? Does he even go to school anymore? What does he bring to the table? He’s a piss-poor hybrid who needs to step up his game. He has bodyguards for crying out loud! I’m tired of seeing him being taken advantage of and getting caught with his pants around his ankles. Maybe the sire bond wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
I think I love Rebekah (Clair Holt). She takes being a bitch to a whole other level. I’m glad she’s back if for no other reason than to torment Elena (Nina Dobrev). I don’t want Elena to have an easy go at her new vampiric life. I want her to get pissed, bite people and be a damn vampire! Elena’s being coddled by Stefan (Paul Wesley) so much I don’t think she’ll ever reach her full potential until she steps out on her own. She needs to be able to let go and let loose. This is where Damon (Ian Somerhalder) comes in handy. He’s the master at letting loose.
Stefan brings up a really good point. If Elena kills Rebekah, all the vampires she’s sired would die. We know all of Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) sired vamps bit it. So who’s in Rebekah’s line? Who would drop off the face of the earth if she were to perish? Better yet, should we care?
Of course, with Klaus comes new information. He mentions what I’m guessing is a secret (or not so secret to vampires) sect of vampire hunters. Now if only we knew more about “the five.” I sense a flashback coming on. With the title of next week’s episode being “The Five,” I think we’ll get more background info and possibly new blood on the scene. A town crawling with vampires cries out for a visit from superhuman vampire hunters. Don’t you think?
Matt (Zach Roerig) has become Elena’s personal “human blood bag.” And he wants to do it. WTF, Matt? This cannot end well and—wait for it—doesn’t. The first time Elena fed off him, I thought it wasn’t a big deal. But Elena has been testing her willpower and she’s nowhere near strong enough to avoid the bloodlust. I expected her to lose control with Matt a lot sooner. So what now? Enter Damon to save his damsel in distress. How will Stefan react to this change of plans in Elena’s assimilation? As an aside, there’s no way Matt can continue walking around like he does after feeding Elena. I regret to inform you, writers, I’m not buying what you’re selling.
Funny lines:
Stefan: “Elena’s transition to vampire has been a little depressing. I want to help her have some fun.”
Damon: “Oh… those who can’t do, teach.”
**
Meredith (Torrey DeVitto): “Why didn’t you call your brother?”
Damon: “Because I’m proud, and stubborn, and oh look! You’re already here!”
**
Stefan catches Elena giving Rebekah the stinky eye: “You’re fixating.”
Elena: “No, I’m just quietly… hating.”
**
I enjoyed “The Rager” so much more than the previous two episodes. Why? Because there was actually something exciting going on. And Klaus was on screen for longer than two seconds. He brings such menace with him and I can’t say the show doesn’t need it. He’s the know-all, be-all vampire and can educate the vampire/hybrid masses. I hope there’s no plan to kill him off again. One more thing, how does werewolf venom affect an Original? I’m looking forward to finding out the answer to that next week since we didn’t get it this week.
