Would You Find The Cure? Review: The Vampire Diaries “The Five”

Air Date: Thursday, November 1, 2012 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“The blood, the feed. It’s easy to get caught up in it.” – Stefan Salvatore

I believe the episodes this season are getting better each week (even with my complaints). I can honestly say I don’t know what’s going to happen and I’m OK with that. More than anything, I’m excited to see we’ve moved from the weak storyline of saving the damsel in distress to combating the big bad now living in Mystic Falls. I know The Vampire Diaries is centered on the people and vampires in town, but I’d like to think other supernatural beings play an important part in what’s happening in the grand scheme of things. “The Five” answers some questions while leaving me with a few more. Just who are these vampire hunters, and who will be able to take them out?

Observations and thoughts:

Well, he didn’t last long. I’m curious to see how Connor fares as one of The Five.

We finally find out what and who The Five are—ancient vampire hunters. Big whoop. Here’s the thing, why weren’t The Five crafted to be immortal like the creatures they hunt? Wouldn’t it make more sense to ensure the continued survival of the human race with protectors who would always be around, or at least hard to kill? If you want me to believe vampires should fear these guys, writers, you’ll have to make them scary. Although, Connor (Todd Williams) is freaking me out a bit. He’s able to overpower hybrids like they’re still human and is almost equal in strength with the vampires. I feel like there’s something we aren’t being told.

Rebekah (Clair Holt) has my sympathy. I want her to find love and I want her to feel appreciated by whomever she gives her heart to. But, I wonder if that would change her personality too much. She can be nice when she wants to, although I rather like her antagonizing side. She gets under your skin and makes you hate her, but you kind of love her, too. Just look at the way she stands up to her big brother. Love might make her weak and I’d hate to see her become a lesser version of herself.

The poor girl just wants someone to love. Is that too much to ask?

Finally! Elena (Nina Dobrev) lets loose and acts like a vampire! To be fair, she still worries me. Her attraction to Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and relishing her life as a vampire are intertwined. He makes her feel free; she can be her true self with him, yet she holds back and turns away from her nature when she realizes what that means for her and her relationship with Stefan (Paul Wesley). One brother holds Elena back while the other presents her with freedom. I like the dynamic of these relationships, but I’d love to know where this storyline is going.

Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is so deliciously evil. I know I’ve said this before, but it needs to be said again. He brings something to the table other villains don’t. I’m not sure if it’s his personality or his air. He doesn’t do anything unless it plays in his favor and he always has a plan. It’s not the only thing he has going for him, but it’s what I look forward to when Klaus is on the scene. Damon has gone the good guy route and doesn’t cause trouble anymore. Someone needs to do something to kick up a fuss in Mystic Falls. I’m more than glad the writers found a way to bring Klaus back this season. The show just wouldn’t be the same if Morgan couldn’t reprise the role of the original evildoing hybrid.

He’s no Alaric but Professor Shane might turn out to be just as formidable.

Unfortunately, Matt (Zach Roerig) has moved from resident blood bag to resident plot device. Was he even necessary in this episode? I know he’s supposed to be Rebekah’s love interest but he’s giving her the cold shoulder (and for good reason). So what is he bringing to the table? Is he the human representative being used to keep the vampires aware of their humanity? I think maybe he should have been picked as a hunter. At least it would give the character an interesting storyline.

Funny lines:

Damon to Elena and Bonnie (Kat Graham) about Professor Shane (David Alpay): “What is this guy, Witchipedia?”

**

Damon to Bonnie: “A frat party. Douche. Central.”

**

Stefan to Klaus and Rebekah during their sibling spat: “Can I just name the million other people I’d rather be having dinner with right now?”

**

Now there’s a cure for vampirism? This is rich. I can’t wait to see what happens with this new knowledge. Can you honestly expect me to believe a potion or spell of some sort is going to breathe life back into a creature that’s been dead for however long? I could believe it if this cure were administered before the transition stage hit, but this new development doesn’t bode well. While I’m curious about the outcome in relation to Elena, I wonder what Damon will think of this.
