How long has it been since the last The Vampire Diaries episode? So long that I don’t remember what happened in that last episode except Isobel (Mia Kirshner) showing up at Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) front door. That little ending left me on my toes and I was more than excited to find out what she’s doing back in town. She comes bearing news. And of course, uncle/daddy John (David Anders) is around to assure Elena all is well with mommy. Let’s not forget Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) go in search of the witch burning site to do whatever Bonnie thinks she can do.
How smart is it to trust Isobel? Not very. I appreciate the realism portrayed in her relationship with Elena. She’s smart not to believe anything her mother says. And vampires do lie. Isobel is very convincing, I must admit. She looks sincere, even sounds it, but give her an inch of your trust and she turns on you. Her final act of sincerity is shocking and almost great enough to warrant her forgiveness for all of her betrayals.
As much as it pains me to say this, I love Katherine (Nina Dobrev). Not so much her evil and vindictive ways, but she has something about her that makes me want to see more of her on screen, rather than Elena. Elena’s boring. Katherine brings about a bit of excitement in everything she does. She carries herself differently, oozes sex-appeal and self-assuredness—those qualities which make her attractive, aside from her obvious physical attributes. And she’s sneaky. I’m always curious to see what she’ll do next.
The scenes where Bonnie and Jeremy are at the witches’ last resting place are riveting. I was even a little creeped out. I didn’t know what to expect and felt Jeremy was going to end up a casualty. I want to have confidence in Bonnie and I’m trying to believe in her, but sometimes she seems a bit cocky about her abilities. I hope that doesn’t cause trouble for her in the future. I really wish Jonas (Randy J. Goodwin) and Luka (Bryton James) were still around to help her harness her powers. Oh well…
I feel for Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jenna (Sara Canning). They were left on the outside for a reason but they don’t see it yet. There’s no way Jenna would be readily accepting of everything, but she would rather be informed. I can understand that. Matt, on the other hand, I’m not sure how I feel about him being on the outside. He is one of the only people in town who’ve been touched by vampires in a negative way—his sister became one and was killed by one. So why does he want to forget? Oh, the sneaky little bugger. And this is what I enjoy about the show. The writers surprise me with something every episode. It may not be a huge development, but it’s always something that catches me off guard.
Favorite Lines:
Damon: “I didn’t know you and Father Witch were so close…”
Isobel: “John told me Ric was dating Auntie Vanilla, and I got jealous.”
A solid return for the show. “Know Thy Enemy” has all the elements of a great episode. The deceit and vindictiveness is at an all time high, and very enjoyable. Not only were important tidbits revealed, we got to see some of the true makings of various characters. My only complaint is the cop-out with Klaus. Everyone’s been dying to see him and what do we get? A possession. Not cool. I know I don’t want to see Alaric (Matthew Davis) taken out so that Klaus can magically reappear as his body hasn’t been disposed of, but really? Can we get a final showdown between the elusive Klaus (in his own body) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies)?
