Review: The Vampire Diaries “Disturbing Behavior” (Katherine to the Rescue!)

Air Date: Thursday, October 6, 2011 8/7c on The CW

So who is guilty of the disturbing behavior this episode is aptly titled for? Is it Stefan (Paul Wesley), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) or Elena (Nina Dobrev)? They each act out in their own way, doing what their friends, associates or family members think is strange. What a spectacular episode. I think the show just gets better and better with each new season. And man, am I glad that Katherine (Dobrev) is back. She’s definitely the one to keep an eye on. Here I thought Rebekah (Clair Holt) would be the serious threat, especially with her supernatural lie detecting powers. But Katherine seems to stay one step ahead of everyone and always has a plan. Her involvement with the Salvatore brothers doesn’t leave room for a dull moment.

Observations:

Bill (Jack Coleman) isn’t at all as he appears. “You’re a vampire sweetheart. I don’t think you’ll ever be okay again.” Harsh words to his daughter, but possibly true. Not only does he truly believe in his mind-over-matter mumbo-jumbo, he’s a product of years of training himself to resist compulsion. That in itself is something to think about. I’d say he’s a formidable foe for the vampires, and they may want to watch their backs. I doubt he’s the only human who doesn’t give in to compulsion. He’s probably been training a slew of others.

Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is my favorite villain. He keeps calm and strikes when you least expect it. I’ve often wondered why he keeps his family members staked and in coffins. Now I think I know. He brings them back when he needs them. I bet Elijah (Daniel Gillies) is lying around in one of them. I was hoping Stefan would find him and wake him up. (I’m not giving up on Elijah coming back. He’s missed.) Too bad Rebekah interrupts his exploration of the coffins in the warehouse.

Here’s another thought: this so-called hunter, the mysterious Mikael—do you think he’ll show up again? There appears to be witches all over the place, and if they know how to extend their lives, why couldn’t they do the same for someone else?

Caroline (Candice Accola) makes some good points in “Disturbing Behavior.” I don’t think she knows Damon any better than everyone else; it’s just that she has an inside scoop into how he thinks. They have a little something in common—they’re both vampires. What I think Elena fails to realize (and Damon points out to her) is he’s not trying to appear human. “I am not Stefan. How about you stop trying to turn me into him?” He’s not looking to blend in or assimilate. He’s a vampire who doesn’t want to suppress his innate being. I think what Bill did to Caroline in “The End of the Affair” touched something in Damon and he’s getting back to his old self.

I’m giving up on what I think I know about the vamps and their senses. Sometimes they hear what they shouldn’t be able to. Other times they simply know when someone’s in a room. These vampires confuse the hell out of me with what they can and cannot do. It’s not important in the grand scheme of things though. Just annoying.

Alaric (Matt Davis) isn’t sitting on his ass anymore. He’s taking a stand and is injecting himself into the council whether they want him there or not. I guess Damon did more than he thought when he killed Alaric, yet again.

Funny lines:

Damon to Sheriff Forbes on Bill: “He sounds like a douche bag to me.”

**

Damon to Alaric and Elena about Caroline’s father: “He threatened to out me. Don’t get me started on the irony of that.”

**

Katherine to Stefan: “I saved you from Hilda the High Voodoo priestess.”

**

“Disturbing Behavior” reveals some things while hiding others. We don’t know why Anna (Malese Jow) keeps appearing to Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) except for the “push and pull” they have going on. Klaus has brought Stefan back to Mystic Falls to find out what he’s hiding from him, and I can almost guarantee who the new witch is he’ll be going after. You didn’t think Bonnie returned just to come back, did you? The special effects continue to amaze me. They are flawless and bring so much to every episode. This is a vampire show, and this is a show I will continue to watch.
