More Like Because the Zzzzzz… Review: The Vampire Diaries “Because the Night”

Season 4, Episode 17

Air Date: Thursday, March 21, 2013, 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“That’s the thing about New York; there’s so much life that a little death goes unnoticed.” – Damon Salvatore

“Because the Night” isn’t the best nor the worst I’ve seen this season. Not great, not bad; just Oh. Kay. But I just couldn’t get into it. I was bored for most of the episode except for the parts pertaining to locating Silas. It’s sad when a show takes place in NYC and makes the city look drab and blah. The Vampire Diaries seems to be dropping the ball lately and I’m still waiting to be wowed. Once again, the music is my savior, yet I can’t rely on the soundtrack to get me through the hour.

Observations and thoughts:

I didn't see this coming.

I didn’t see this coming.

I almost feel like the course of the show has been derailed. The plot of each new episode doesn’t mesh with what’s previously happened in the season. And I have to point out how some of the events during “Because the Night” are so unbelievable, I can’t focus on what’s going on. Vampires are feeding on people in the open with no one paying any attention; a popular club looks almost empty. Is there a reason more extras weren’t called in to pack the room? I don’t get how I’m supposed to buy a public feeding going unnoticed when there’s room enough around the threesome for a camera crew to walk around in. I know this show lies in the fantasy realm, but come on! Elena (Nina Dobrev), Damon (Ian Somerhalder), and Rebekah’s (Claire Holt) road trip is barely entertaining after that mess. I hate the way the costume department dressed Somerhalder. His hair did not look like it was styled for the 70s nor did it fit him. He looks older in the flashback than he does in the present. The only good thing to come out of the flashback to the 70s is the appearance by Lexi (Arielle Kebbel). She always brings a smile to my face and I never know when she’ll come around to avert a crisis. I’m still bummed about her being killed off. What a bad decision, writers.

Is this the NYC of today? I think not.

Is this the NYC of today? I think not.

Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Caroline (Candice Accola) bicker like an old married couple. I didn’t see it at first, but I do now. He wants her forgiveness, yet she doesn’t have any desire to ease his suffering. You have to wonder why. Is her simmering non-existent affection for him causing her to stay mad at him? I think she’s hurt by his actions because she cares about him so much. So what better way to void those feelings than by turning to hate, right? Caroline isn’t fooling me. You can see it in the way she looks at him that she wants Klaus and if he were a better man, she’d admit she likes him. I think he can be what she needs; he wants to be better for her. The tension between those two is stifling, thanks to the chemistry between Morgan and Accola (can you say smokin’!!). They’ll give in to it one of these days, though. I have to admit, I enjoyed watching the scenes between Klaus and Caroline more than the Damon/Elena/Rebekah triangle in New York. That should not be the case. And what do you think Klaus meant by his comment to Stefan? “Don’t underestimate the allure of darkness, Stefan. Even the purest hearts are drawn to it.” He looks at Caroline when he says it. Do you think she’s tempted to go over to the dark side? Would she understand Klaus better if she did and finally find a way to forgive him his trespasses?

Memorable/funny lines:

Damon to Stefan: “And that tone is the reason I didn’t pick up the phone the first 20 times you called.”

**

Elena to Damon: “You got Lexi’d?”

**

Elena: “I know he’s after the cure. I’m not stupid.”

Rebekah: “Let’s not say things we don’t mean.”

**

Stefan: “Well, if Shane really was working with Silas, chances are he was helping him plan his next move.”

Caroline: “Where? On his evil villain ‘To Do’ list? Steal blood, perform three massacres, pick up dry cleaning.”

Klaus: “Actually not to nitpick but we evil villains usually use minions to pick up our dry cleaning; that sort of thing.”

**

Klaus: “Besides, Stefan and I work well together. Or at least we did in the 20s.”

Stefan: “Well, granted my, uh, my emotions were off.”

Klaus: “And that’s why you were more fun.”

**

Just who is Damon posing for? LOL!

Just who is Damon posing for? LOL!

The last two minutes of “Because the Night” almost saves this one from completely sinking. Silas is a total bad ass and he’s wrapped in a nice package: Professor Shane (David Alpay). At least now we know why his death was brushed under the rug. Shane is so familiar to everyone, he’ll be able to get close enough to whomever he needs to in order to get things done (unless Rebekah rats him out). I like how twisted that is. Here’s hoping Silas brings about some mayhem. Mystic Falls is boring without it.
