Oh, Rosie (Katie Findlay), what did you get yourself into? A casino? So what does this have to do with anything? I’m guessing we won’t find out until another suspect is sought. It’s interesting the things Linden (Mirielle Enos) is able to find on her daily runs. I knew she had a keen eye and she never lets details slip by her. Well, except for details pertaining to her son. She is so wrapped up in the Larsen case that she has no idea what’s going on with him and she’s losing ground with the ones she loves. Pretty soon she’ll only have one friend, and even he gets pissed off at her on a daily basis.
“Damn. Is there one or two days a month you’re not PMS’ing?” – Holder
Holder (Joel Kinnaman) is full of surprises. I think we learn something redeeming about him every week. He’s the comic relief and resident pragmatist. “You know, people do crazy ass things, you know.” Very true statement. How deep does his past go, I wonder?
I really appreciate the suspense thrown into each episode. I hold my breath and my heart freezes mid-beat while waiting for Linden to discover if her son is hanging out at “the tunnel.” When it turns out to be someone else, I’m able to breathe again. I cannot imagine what it feels like to have a child missing and not know where they are. I don’t ever want to imagine it and Enos does an excellent job of expressing the emotion her character goes through during the search.

What’s interesting is this is the first non-Rosie centric episode. Yes, it begins with Linden and Holder following a lead to the case but quickly turns into a search for Linden’s son. I think she is learning what it is Mitch (Michelle Forbes) is experiencing and it may have a positive effect on Linden more than she realizes. And why isn’t there anything for the kids in this town to do but hang out in skeevy parks? It makes me appreciate what Councilman Richmond (Billy Campbell) is trying to do with the youth.
Linden: “You can’t be a vegetarian and eat meat. It doesn’t make sense.”
Holder: “Everything makes sense; depends on how you perceive it.”
Linden: “Oh yes, perception is circumstantial. I forgot that nugget.”
I like this chat between Linden and Holder. It makes me think there is more than meets the eye with these two. We get a clear view of who Holder is and how he thinks. He’s a different kind of police officer. He sees things from both sides, not just the cop point of view. He applies that to everything he does. I think he’s good for Linden in more ways than one. He might help her break out of her all work and no play mode.

Linden finally seems to be opening up. We don’t quite know what all the issues are surrounding her life, but she lets us in just a little to see she’s human and has flaws. She needs help. She needs someone to talk to. And she has serious issues with kids going into the system. Learning that Regi (Annie Corley) is her social worker and not her mother throws me for a loop. No wonder Rick (Callum Keith Rennie) took the time out to come to her last episode. He knows her better than we do.
“Missing” is probably my favorite episode of The Killing so far. It’s definitely the rawest and gets us closer to the two detectives heading up the Larsen case. I think I know more about Linden and Holder and like them even more for it. Sarah Linden is not as on point as she seems. Her personal life is falling apart before her eyes and she can’t see it. Stephen Holder is more than just a slick talking ex-junkie. He has a heart and a pretty big one at that. I would like to see more episodes which focus on one or two characters at a time. Very well done writers!
