Burial plots, caskets, and funerals – a slightly morbid subject and not something Paul (Oliver Platt) is quite ready to deal with, but Cathy (Laura Linney) knows they are grossly unprepared for what may happen sooner rather than later. I just don’t get why Rebecca (guest star Cynthia Nixon) wants to have a funeral for baby Cathy. She miscarried; she unfortunately doesn’t have a body to put in the casket. I understand the significance but a simple service with close friends and loved ones would suffice.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think having sushi and an open bar is a bit over the top for a child’s funeral. What knocks this thing out of the park is Rebecca’s blasting it on Twitter. Really, Twitter? Then, Sean (John Hickey) stops taking his meds to be able to fully feel the pain of losing baby Cathy. He doesn’t put out a Twitter blast, but he places an obituary in the local paper. And since Rebecca and Sean decided to name the baby after Cathy, all of Cathy’s old high school friends come to the funeral and send tons of gifts, flowers, fruit baskets, and what not. Of course this doesn’t sit well with Rebecca.
Rebecca: “You’re totally hijacking my funeral!”
Cathy: “Actually, Rebecca, you’re hijacking mine. You chose to name the baby after me; you threw this crazy funeral; you put it on Twitter. Thanks to you, I’m already dead.”
I love when Rugby Slut (Nadia Dajani) shows up to the funeral to let Paul know she’ll be there for him. Oh but Cathy has a few choice words for her, “If you so much as lay one French manicured hand on him after I’m in the ground, I will claw my way out of the dirt and I will haunt you the rest of your slutty drunk life!” Oh Cathy, look at the pot calling the kettle black. If I recall, you cheated on Paul first with the sexy Lenny (Idris Elba).
Myk (Boyd Holbrook) and Andrea (Gabourey Sidibe) seem to be getting, uh, really close. If the Max Buy van is a rockin’, don’t come a knockin’! LOL! Never quite understood it, but it seems funerals make people horny. Maybe they think sex is an escape from the pain of losing someone. With the gloomy air of death surrounding them, by having sex, it’s almost like a middle finger to the Reaper saying ‘Look, we are not dead! We are alive and fucking!’ Or it could just be all the booze and sushi they had. Either way, people like hooking up at funerals.
I’m worried about Adam (Gabriel Basso). He’s a bit of a brat but I know he’s hurting. When he walks into the living room filled with a sea of flowers and gift baskets, he asks, “Who died?” Cathy replies, “Me,” and the look on Adam’s face expresses more than words can say. It’s obvious his mother’s illness has weighed heavily on his mind so I think it’s great he’s going to an online support chat room—Kids of Cancer (KOC)—to talk with other kids whose parents have cancer. However, Poppy (guest star Parker Posey), isn’t quite a kid. She’s a grown woman who’s probably old enough to be Adam’s mom! Not sure where this story line is going…but I hope it doesn’t end up with Adam and Poppy rocking vans.
