Air Date: Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 9/8c on Fox
RATING:
“Every time you have sex with the same person, Jess, you die… just a little bit. It’s like a copy of a copy.” – Schmidt
Okay, so the premise of “Valentine’s Day” is it’s Valentine’s Day (big stretch there) and Jess is single. She’s looking for someone to have a “one night stand” with and goes to the local watering hole to find the luck guy. “Tonight, it’s all about what little Jess wants.” While this may seem like a great premise, with plenty of shenanigans and great gags, it falls flat. We see Jess (Zooey Deschanel) doing her usual thing (being quirky) but there’s nothing new or exciting about it, or anything remotely related to Valentine’s Day. I want to see Jess in her element but going above and beyond in the laughs department without choking on a cherry. We know Jess is not like other girls but Deschanel just doesn’t play up her talents the way she should.
Observations and thoughts:
Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) guest stars as Oliver. He is the male version of Jess without the brains, quirks or hilarity. So yeah, he’s nothing like Jess. And a complete idiot. But she’s magically attracted to him because they “have nothing in common.” Not a far stretch from the character Kwanten plays on True Blood, so essentially he doesn’t have to work too hard to impress us. “He’s literally the most boring person I’ve ever met.” Great choice for a one night stand, Jess. Great choice.
Julia (Lizzy Caplan) is a workaholic and it infringes upon her and Nick’s (Jake Johnson) dinner. Boring. I think we already know Nick and Julia will run into this problem but it kind of comes through more with it being Valentine’s Day.
The funniest bit of “Valentine’s Day” is actually Julia’s intern Cliff (Clark Duke). He has me cracking up when he asks Nick, “With her, the… is it gentle or is it not so gentle?” I can’t believe he says that almost as much as Nick can’t believe it. I mean, who is this kid? I love him and want to see more of him. He’s funny and I dig his character.
Again, Winston (Lamorne Morris) is stuck in a not too interesting side story which doesn’t make much sense in the grand scheme of things. Morris could be used in a much better way than his girlfriend Shelby’s (Kali Hawk) sangria maker. Where are his witty lines? Where’s the comedy I know he’s capable of? These actors are all hilarious yet we don’t get to see them doing anything funny. I don’t want to point fingers, but writers… this kind of falls on you.
Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) should find a way to be together—officially. (It was sooooo predictable that they’d hook up on Valentine’s Day, right?) They are the cutest when you see them together and I really want Cece to be with a guy who will appreciate her. Kyle (Stephen Amell) is an idiot and doesn’t recognize what he has. Schmidt would worship the ground Cece walks on and they’d make magic. Or so I think.
Funny lines:
Winston to Schmidt about his Valentine’s Day date: “You know for two years I had her number stored in my phone as ‘Shreddy’ because I was too drunk to type ‘Jodie.’”
**
Julia’s intern Cliff to Nick: “But you know what? I would still hit that. I mean, despite the age difference, I would just take that to pound town. You know what I mean? Just take her a visit to the bone yard.”
**
Schmidt to Cece: “Where’s what’s his name?”
Cece: “We are actually gonna meet up later because… he has a surprise for me.”
Schmidt: “Spoiler—it’s his penis.”
**
Kyle at the playground, yelling: “I love brown people!”
Cece: “That’s racist, Kyle.”
**
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one but I certainly expected more, especially with Kwanten guest starring. Can’t give this one the thumbs up because it just wasn’t funny enough. Bring Cliff back for another few episodes and we can talk. Otherwise, I think the writers need to reconsider the direction they are taking this show. Seriously.
