Air Date: Tuesday, November 15, 2011, 9/8c on Fox
I seriously laughed my ass off watching this episode. I don’t know how the show’s creator Elizabeth Meriwether came up with the concept for New Girl, but I’m glad she did. We learn a few things about the gang and I have to admit, I fall in love with the roommates a little more each time I see them.
Jess (Zooey Deschanel) invites her crush Paul (guest star Justin Long) to dinner at the apartment, but she can’t cook. Actually, she knows nothing about cooking a turkey or making any of the usual dishes that are served during a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Why am I not surprised? But you know who does have cooking expertise—Schmidt (Max Greenfield). Talk about a surprise I didn’t see coming. But here’s the funny thing: he’s a nut job when it comes to how everything is prepared, including thorough hand washing. I’m with him on the hand washing thing though.
Observations:
Cece (Hannah Simone) admits she has a thing for Schmidt. “Yeah, he’s got this rage inside of him, this fury and I just love it.” I could see that coming a mile away and don’t know how I feel about it. She’s only into him because he brings something out in her she likes, I think. She can break him, but I hope she doesn’t destroy our beloved Schmidt. Greenfield delivers another outstanding performance as the OCD-driven chef for Thanksgiving. I’m beginning to think we have quite a few things in common. Yeah, don’t mess with me in the kitchen.
I love seeing another Jess. “Oh my God, there’s two of them.” Yes, Nick (Jake Johnson), Paul is the male version of Jess. I think it’s cute. Not only is it cute, it’s what Jess needs to shake Nick up so he’ll finally admit to himself they might be good together. If Paul notices (and I did mention it before) Nick’s reaction to Jess, why doesn’t she? There’s chemistry there; she seeks his approval about who she’s dating… wake up you two!
Winston (Lamorne Morris) takes the backseat this week, but he’s fabulous during his scene with Paul. Their word association game is hilarious and Winston’s initial reaction to Paul— complete silence with a blank look on his face as Paul talks to him—is comical but realistic. He doesn’t know him, doesn’t want to know him, but tolerates him for Jess. Talk about roommate love.
Do you think Nick yells a lot? I sure do. When Jess comes into a room, he doesn’t talk in a normal tone, he yells. I wonder if he’s nervous around her and yelling is the way he reacts. Methinks yes! Just another thing to add to the Nick-likes-Jess list.
“I put it on permanent press.” They put a turkey in the dryer! *shaking my head* They put a turkey in the dryer to cook because it’s too big for the oven. Seriously, how funny is that?! It’s probably the most creative way I’ve seen a turkey cooked. It beats deep frying, doesn’t it?
Funny lines:
Schmidt to Jess about the mysterious Paul she invites to dinner: “Be honest, is the turkey named Paul?”
**
Schmidt on the sexiest holidays: “The most sexy holidays are the 4th of July, Independence Day obviously, Women’s History Month and Christmas.”
**
Schmidt to Cece after she shoves potatoes in his face: “Look at this recipe, look at the recipe! Where in this recipe does it say put mashed potatoes on Schmidt’s nose?”
**
Jess to Nick about wanting to have sex with Paul: “I wanna take him down to China Town and slice him off a piece of this pumpkin pie, okay?”
**
New Girl is quirky, witty and fun. I can’t ask for more in a great comedy series which I hope continues to be as funny as I know it can be. Great guest stars help and I’d love to see more of them. So please, bring Justin Long back. He does the geeky shy guy to perfection. And I’m still trying to figure out what the “give me that hat” is. Hilarious!
